Inspired by Family, Guided by Purpose

Anson, a member of the men’s soccer team and three-year letterwinner, recognizes that his story wouldn’t be possible without the people who have supported him from the start.

“I was born in Henderson, Nevada, but moved to Maui, Hawaii, when I was very young. Although I was born [on the mainland], I will forever call Maui my home,” Anson said. “My life growing up can be described as a fantasy. I was blessed with amazing people to guide me to who I have become today. Without them, there would be no story.”

The Foundation of Gratitude

Anson credits his loving upbringing and tight-knit family — especially his parents Vilma and Robert — for shaping his values and ambition.

“My family is known for their hard work, dedication and family-first values,” he said. “It’s shaped the way I live my life and achieve the goals I set for myself.”

He recalls a phrase that continues to motivate him: Never give up.

“If I were ever to give up, I would be one certified loser!” he said, laughing. “If I at least try, I’m a winner in my book. My parents have been the greatest inspiration in my life because I see them working hard to provide for me.”

A Career of Care

Anson, who is soon graduating from Linfield's School of Nursing, is on track to become a nurse — another goal rooted in service and shaped by his family’s example.

“A future career goal of mine is to take care of patients and see them be discharged, knowing I made a difference,” he said.

Yet he won't stop there. He’s already thinking ahead: “Another goal is to eventually become a nurse practitioner. And my biggest dream is to return home to Maui and take care of my community and ohana (extended family).”

Lessons from the Field

While planning for a health care career, Anson grew as a student-athlete. Soccer has been a part of his life since he was five years old.

“From traveling to different states to compete, receiving knowledge on all things in life, meeting lifelong friends and teammates, experiencing winning tournaments, and meeting coaches and mentors — soccer gave me a passion to carry into adulthood,” he said.

Like many students, Anson faced a setback during COVID-19, when school and sports were canceled.

“It was an obstacle that set me back in finding enjoyment,” he says. “But I never gave up on finding that fun again.”

Leading with Heart

“I want to help pull this program up — from a team that was consistently losing to one that’s talked about, making headlines, and earning respect,” he said. “My mindset is to be the best version of myself for my team and make sure they’re getting 110% of my effort.”

A Story of Strength

In a world where athletic success is often measured by stats and scores, Anson's story offers a different kind of strength: the power of purpose, persistence and gratitude. By honoring the support of his loved ones and holding tight to his goals, he’s building a life that makes a difference — on the field, in the hospital and back home in Maui.
