Saturday, May 26
11 a.m.: Nursing Pinning Ceremony, Mittleman Jewish Community Center, Portland. Tickets are required to attend the event.
4:30 p.m.: Graduates and faculty report to HHPA Building, McMinnville Campus. Seniors should wear cap and gown and line up in the breezeway. Faculty assemble in the Multipurpose Room.
5 p.m.: Baccalaureate Service, Ted Wilson Gymnasium, HHPA Building, McMinnville Campus.
The Rev. Erika Marksbury, senior pastor of the First Baptist Church in McMinnville, will present the Baccalaureate address. Over the years, Marksbury’s faith has been shaped by the American Baptist congregation in which she grew up and was ordained; an internship focused on racial reconciliation and community development in Jackson, Miss.; the chance to learn about poverty, hope and resilience while working in Machakos, Kenya; and the years she spent teaching religion and literature at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Ottawa University and a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. Marksbury is currently pursuing an interdisciplinary Ph.D. from the University of Missouri - Kansas City, where her research and writing focuses on ritual.
6:30 p.m.: Grad Finale, Dillin Hall. Graduating seniors and their families are invited to celebrate the transition from student to alumnus during Grad Finale/Senior Celebration in Dillin Hall, following baccalaureate exercises.
Sunday, May 27
9 a.m.: Graduates report to Ted Wilson Gymnasium in cap and gown.
9:20 a.m.: Faculty robe in Fred Meyer Lounge.
10 a.m.: Commencement on the green between Melrose Hall and the President’s House. Refreshments follow in the Oak Grove.
Susan D. Hyde ’00, professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley, will deliver the commencement address. Hyde studies international influences on domestic politics and teaches courses on international relations and comparative politics. She is an expert on international election observation, election fraud and the promotion of democracy. She has served as an international election observer with organizations in Afghanistan, Albania, Indonesia, Liberia, Nicaragua, Pakistan and Venezuela, and she has worked with the Carter Center, the National Democratic Institute, Democracy International, the International Republican Institute, and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems. At Berkeley, Hyde holds the Avice M. Saint Chair in Public Policy and serves as the Executive Director of the Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP) research network, a global network of scholars and practitioners dedicated to generating and disseminating rigorous evidence on governance, politics, and institutions.
Note: Access to the commencement green is restricted at 9:45 a.m. to prepare for the processional. Some aisles will be closed until after our graduates and faculty have entered and are seated, so please make every effort to arrive early and be in place.
