The SOIL (Sustainably Oriented Interconnected Living) Project is a week-long applied sustainability program for all new students (first-years and transfers). Through participating in SOIL, you will have the opportunity to learn about what it means to live sustainably and how to apply that to your life at Linfield and in McMinnville. The SOIL program is focused on activities, field trips, and volunteering opportunities that give new students a chance to connect with the local community and become knowledgeable about what McMinnville has to offer from the perspective of living sustainably. SOIL is also a chance for you to connect with other new students, be mentored by your student leaders, settle into Linfield and the surrounding community, and so much more. After The SOIL Project, you will have the opportunity to lead your peers in sustainability practices, as well as have opportunities for further involvement both on campus and in the community.
The goal of The SOIL Project is to inspire new-students to live sustainably as a member of the Linfield and McMinnville communities, while also developing community connections before the school year begins.
Participants have the opportunity to:
- meet and begin friendships with other new students
- develop connections to the Linfield and McMinnville communities
- learn about living sustainably and how to apply this to daily life
- meet and be mentored by student leaders
- learn and develop skills to be a change leader on campus
- engage in meaningful activities that make a difference in your community
Anyone who has been accepted and is planning to attend Linfield College for the first time in the Fall is encouraged to apply. This includes true first-year freshmen as well as transfer students. Due to limited space, we are unable to accept all applicants. No experience in service, sustainability, or leadership is required - this is your chance to learn! We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic about Linfield and the community, open to new ideas and experiences, and willing to volunteer (Please note: community service projects may entail manual labor. Reasonable accommodations can be arranged with advanced notification).
When is the application due?
Applications for preorientation programs and scholarships are due on or before June 30th, 2017.
What does the program cost?
To participate, a $50 deposit to hold your spot is required. All other expenses are covered! This includes housing, three meals a day, transportation during the program, and all program activities. If you are accepted, you will be notified of where to send your deposit.
Where will participants live during the week?
Students will move directly into their Fall housing assignment on that first Friday of the program. Students will not have to move again.
When will applicants be notified?
Applicants will be notified no later than July 21st, 2017 regarding program acceptance. At that time, we will let you know where to send your deposit, as well as provide you with a packing list, when to arrive, and many more details. Please do not make your travel arrangements prior to receiving notification of your acceptance.
I am an athlete, can I apply to participate?
New students who are trying out for athletics for fall sports at Linfield are not able to participate in this program due to conflicting schedules.
Does applying to the program mean that I will be accepted as a SOIL participant?
Due to the program's current capacity and limited space at community partner sites, SOIL has a maximum of 16 student participants.
Can I participate in The SOIL Project and another pre-orientation weekend program?
Although all of the pre-orientation programs have a lot to offer new students, new students may only participate in one program as they all take place at the same time.
Are there other opportunities for involvement in Sustainability at Linfield, even if I don’t participate in the program?
Absolutely! Linfield and the surrounding community have many avenues for involvement, especially that which is within the realm of Sustainability.
