COVID-19 Temporary Academic Policies for Spring 2020

Linfield College continues to deliver the same excellence in education during the current COVID-19 Pandemic. We acknowledge the unexpected circumstances and have developed the following temporary academic polices. These blanket accommodations are intended to provide some options for students to encourage them to focus on their learning, health and well-being. At the same time, we understand that not every option is appropriate for every student in every situation and advise students to carefully consider their options and seek appropriate counsel from their instructors and advisors.

Policy #1: The last day to withdraw from a course has been extended two weeks from Friday, April 24, 2020 to Friday, May 8, 2020. Students must submit the electronic “REG Add/Drop/Withdraw” form linked on the Registrar’s website by May 8, 2020.

Comments: Students are strongly encouraged to confer with their instructor before withdrawing from a course to ensure that they have exhausted all other options to successfully complete the course. Students receiving financial aid or scholarships should work with their academic advisor in conjunction with the Office of Financial Aid to determine the impact a “W” grade may have on their financial aid.
FAQ's Policy #1

Policy #2: The deadline for completion of work for fall semester, 2019, and January term, 2020 incomplete grades can be extended from April 15, 2020, to as late as May 29, 2020 as deemed appropriate by the instructor of the course (without petition).

Comments: Students with Incomplete grades should consult with the instructor of the course about work completed thus far and what the appropriate deadline is for their situation. Note: Allowing the possibility of a deadline extension does not preclude any student from submitting the work earlier or the instructor from submitting the grade—it just allows automatic flexibility when needed. Extensions beyond the end of the semester could still be petitioned.

Policy #3: A moratorium will be placed on Academic Suspensions for spring, 2020.

Comments: Linfield students who are currently on Academic Probation will automatically be allowed to return for summer or fall, 2020, on Continued Academic Probation, without having to appeal to the Student Policies Committee. The decision to return should be made in consultation with the academic advisor, the Registrar, and the Office of Financial Aid. It is likely that most of these students will still have to appeal their financial aid.
FAQ's Policy #3

Policy #4: Students may elect to change their final course grading method from traditional grading (A,-F) to Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) for each course they take in spring, 2020. The window for making this irrevocable election is May 15-June 12, 2020. Students must submit the electronic “Petition for Exception to Policy” form linked on the Registrar’s website by June 12, 2020.

Comments: Students should consult with their advisors and instructors and carefully read the FAQ document before making this election. Students may elect to change the grading method for each course individually. Students may end the semester with a mix of traditional and S/U grading based on their situation. Faculty will submit student grades according to the traditional grading method, and students will be able to see these grades before electing to change the grading method for each of their courses. It is highly recommended that students consult with their advisors before changing the grading method.
