Message from the Presidential Search Committee

Dear Linfield Community:

I am grateful to all of the students, faculty, staff and alumni who have reached out to me (or others on the Search Committee) with questions, comments, or suggestions about the process of selecting Linfield’s next president. This is a community effort, and we welcome these conversations.

I also want to give everyone an update of where things stand at the start of the fall semester.

The Search Committee interviewed potential executive-search firms last April, eventually selecting Spencer Stuart. The firm assisted in drafting a “Position Statement” for the job and immediately began advertising and making key contacts to find candidates. The Committee met again in mid-August to begin vetting initial applicants and to work out the rest of the search timeline. We are meeting again this week to continue that process – just today, in fact, we voted to name Dr. Brenda DeVore Marshall, Professor of Theatre and Communication Arts, as vice chair of the Committee.

Our intention is to complete the first set of candidate reviews by early next month, and then to meet the selected next round of candidates for interviews in mid-November. Finalists from that second round of interviews will be invited to visit both campuses to meet with the Linfield community in December.

By the February 2018 meeting of the Board of Trustees, we would expect to have a final recommendation for the Board to consider. That will also leave time for a smooth transition over several months before Dr. Hellie retires on July 1, 2018.

The timeframe is not set in stone, and could change. The committee just wants to keep the community updated and to be as transparent as possible about our goals for this important process.

Finally, I want to leave you with a sense of optimism. Linfield is a unique and wonderful place. The level of candidates who are interested in leading the college reflects that. We look forward to completing this process and selecting the best leader for this institution for years to come.

Best regards,
