Computer Support

IT purchases, installs, configures, and provides on-going assistance with computer hardware and software for staff and faculty on the Portland campus. The department also maintains and supports the computer lab in Loveridge Hall and the computer classroom in Peterson Hall.

The IT department supports several software packages to varying degree. Our primary productivity software in the labs and in staff and faculty offices includes Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook on Windows machines and Entourage on Macintoshes. Browsers supported include Firefox on both Windows machines and Macintoshes, Internet Explorer on Windows machines and Firefox and Safari on Macintoshes. In addition, the IT department also provides general support for other applications such as Acrobat, ParScore, and other applications as necessary.

In the Loveridge Hall Lab, in addition to the standard software, we provide a number of software packages that are specific for various courses on the Portland campus. These packages include both computer-assisted-instruction and examination software. IT support for these extends to maintaining the software and providing basic trouble-shooting for printing or other system-related problems. Programs available in the computer classroom, Peterson 108, include ArcGIS and SPSS.

Linfield E-mail accounts
Currently-enrolled students and currently-employed faculty and staff of Linfield College are eligible for "e-mail accounts" (known as CatNET accounts). A CatNET account will remain valid during the time the student or employee is associated with college. The CatNET account provides access to most services including e-mail, WebAdvisor, BlackBoard (in enrolled courses), CatFiles, and Library-licensed databases. Use of CatNET accounts is subject to the college's acceptable use policies. .

Operating Systems
We support users using the Macintosh (OS X) and Windows XP operating systems on college-owned computers.

The Portland campus is budgeted for a four-year upgrade cycle of faculty and staff computers.
