Our student musicians are talented inside and outside the classroom. Here are just some of our proudest moments from recent years:
Awards and Competitions
Zach Gulaboff Davis ‘14 received a prestigious Young Composers Award in 2013 from the National Federation of Music Clubs, one of the largest music organizations in the world. His “Suite for Piano and Viola,” chosen based on creative and technical ability, won Davis a $900 prize.
Delaney Bullinger ‘15 and Yucheng Zhang ‘14, each won top prizes at the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition during the 2012-2013 academic year. In the summer, Bullinger and Kayla Wilkens ‘12 took part in the Atlantic Music Festival in Maine.
Jaimie McDonald ‘14, Zach Gulaboff Davis ’14, Kelsey Garrett ’15, Tabitha Gholi ‘15, and Christian Santangelo ’15 were winners in the Linfield Department of Music concerto competition and performed their works with the Linfield Chamber Orchestra.
Tabitha Gholi '15 won first place in the young adult category at the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers Association Competition in 2012 and 2013. She also won seventh place at the National Oldtime Fiddlers' Contest and Festival 2013 in Weiser, Idaho.
Music Festivals, Symposia, and Performance Groups

In March 2014, flutist Kathryn van Dyk '16, clarinetist Quillan Bourassa '16, bassoonist Jasmine Libert '16, hornists Sasha Meyer '15 and Rachael Conway '17, and percussionists Kelsey Garrett '15 and Christian Santangelo '15 were selected to play in the College Band Directors National Association Intercollegiate Honor Band. They are under the direction of Professor Joan Haaland Paddock and will perform with other musicians from the Northwestern and Western divisions of the CBDNA.
Zach Gulaboff Davis ‘14 and Josef Komarek ‘14 were among 90 composers invited to compose original pieces for the Oregon Bach Festival. Davis was also asked to compose for the California Summer Music 2013 program, while Komarek became a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) in 2012.
Bass trombonist John-Martin Paddock ’16 and timpanist Christian Santangelo ’15 were selected for the Oregon Music Education Association’s 2013 Oregon Collegiate Winds & Percussion. Comprised of Oregon college students, this group of 18 winds and percussion performed Beethoven’s 5th Symphony in the Oregon All-State Orchestra at the Northwest National Association for Music Education Convention in Portland.
In the 2011-2012 academic year, Kaia Machalek ’12, Jenny Morgan ’13, Zoe Rozzi ’13, and Amanda Pierce ’15 took part in the 2012 Intercollegiate Honor Band of the College Band Directors National Association Conference Southwestern/Northwestern regional meeting in Reno, Nevada.
In June 2013, student Kelsey Garrett ‘15 helped move the Noll Chinese Musical Instrument Collection into permanent exhibition at the Vivian A. Bull Music Center. Working with Professor Joan Haaland Paddock, Garrett has continued this faculty-student collaborative research project into the 2013-2014 academic year.
Assistant Professor Anna Song received the 2013 Faculty-Student Collaborative Research Grant for her study, “The Impact of Cooperative and Peer Learning and Reflective Writing in Aural Skills.” The study looked at the effectiveness of new approaches of the Ear Traning and Sight Singing (ETSS) curriculum that were introduced at Linfield in fall 2012. Some of these improvements include cooperative and peer-learning activities and reflective writing. Results of this study were used to enhance the ETSS curriculum in the 2013-2014 academic year, and were presented at a poster session in Portland in February 2013.
Recent graduate Heidi (Vanden Bos) Edmonds ‘10 wrote her thesis on the effects of music therapy on dementia. In April 2012, Edmonds returned to Linfield to talk about topics in music therapy and how different patients can benefit from it.
