Urban Bear Even in the heart of the city at the Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing, nursing students can look out from their classrooms and see a bear. “The Bear,” a bronze sculpture located in the lower courtyard between Loveridge and Peterson Halls, stands watch in the center of the paved space, enclosed in a glass den with views of surrounding classrooms and hallways. Noreen Johansson, professor emerita of nursing, donated the statue to the college in 1990, while substituting as dean of nursing for the late Dean Pam Harris, who took a summer sabbatical. Johansson purchased the piece from a Portland antique store, and learned it had previously been placed in front of a museum in Southeast Asia, where visitors would rub its nose for good luck. The donation was part of a campus beautification effort. (Photos by Mardi Mileham) 2 4 - l i n f i e l d m a g a z i n e Winter 2016
