Linfield alumni bring value to their fields, communities In early November, every time I turned on my car radio, another outstanding Linfi eld graduate was in the news. I heard Margaret (Shepard) Van Vliet ’85, director of Oregon Housing and Community Services, interviewed about homelessness in Oregon. Another day, Michael Lindblad ’94, Oregon’s Teacher of the Year, was featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Think Out Loud. Later that same week, OPB ran a story about the sale of 10 Barrel Brewing, co-owned by Garret Wales ’06. On three different days the program featured Linfi eld alumni from three different decades who work in three very different fi elds. They are leaders in business, education and community service. Each 2 4 - l i n f i e l d m a g a z i n e Winter 2015 graduate differs in style and skill set and yet all of them are impacting Oregon. I listened with pride as our alumni were interviewed. Each sounded so articulate. Clearly, they are the products of a liberal arts education and used this opportunity to practice critical thinking and clear communication skills. Though not all alumni are on the radio each week, it was a wonderful reminder that Linfi eld is educating creative leaders who are engaged locally, nationally and globally. Our alumni bring value to their communities whether they are educators, civic leaders or business owners. I’m glad I happened to tune in just in time to hear a few of them shine.
