Students receive prestigious awards • Erin Carson ’15 of Vancouver, Wash., and Breanna Ribeiro ’14 of Hines have been offered Fulbright grants to teach and study in Taiwan and Rwanda respectively. • Seven graduates will spend next year teaching English in Japan after being accepted to the Japanese Exchange Teaching (JET) program: Sydney Owen ’15 of Sandy; Caitlyn Talbot ’15 of Lake Forest Park, Wash.; Joel Trousdale ’15 of Hillsboro; Jeremy Odden ’15 of Seattle, Wash.; Dawn Wyruchowski ’15 of Kirkland, Wash.; Nicholas Coney ’15 of Volcano, Hawaii; and Gabrielle Nygaard ’13 of Forest Grove. • Angela Leingang ’18 of Tacoma, Wash., and Garrett Lodge ’18 of Boise, Idaho, were selected as Kemper scholars, chosen from a select 16 U.S. liberal arts colleges. • Luis Santillan-Guzman ’17 of Parkdale will study abroad in Marseille, France, next year after receiving the Gilman Scholarship. • Ellen Massey ’16 of Sequim, Wash., is working with children’s education in Granada, Nicaragua, this summer after earning the Deborah M. Olsen Public Service Internship. Summer 2015 l i n f i e l d m a g a z i n e - 5 • Lex Runciman, professor of English, The Julie Olds and Thomas Hellie Creative Achievement Award, honoring outstanding creative work that has been recognized by peers and has been or is slated for dissemination in ways appropriate for the specific focuses of the work. • Reshmi Dutt-Ballerstadt, professor of English, The Marvin and Laurie Henberg International Scholar Award recognizing a faculty member whose scholarly activity on an international topic or theme has passed peer review and has been or is slated for publication. • Nicholas Buccola, associate professor of political science, The Samuel Graf Faculty Achievement Award recognizing a faculty member who has made an outstanding contribution to the life of the college that extends beyond his or her regular duties. Linfield Magazine earns CASE award Linfield Magazine earned a bronze award in the general interest magazine category at the 2015 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VIII Communication Awards. The award recognized Mardi Mileham, editor; Laura Davis, assistant editor; and Candido Salinas, graphic designer. The magazine previously won awards for cover design, writing, overall improvement, and photography and illustration. Linfield College students in Totem Shriver’s Studio Practices 101 art class took their work outdoors this spring, creating a mural for Harvest Fresh Grocery and Deli in McMinnville. The project gave students valuable experience as working artists in the business community. Inspired by the Yamhill County wine industry, the light-hearted painting depicts a couple with wine pouring into a glass, along with other elements including a few rabbits, the Harvest Fresh icon. Students spent eight class periods painting the mural, the third Linfield has painted for Harvest Fresh. Student symposium Student work from 24 different departments and disciplines in a wide variety of formats was recognized at the 23rd annual Linfield College Student Symposium on May 15. The symposium, featuring a compilation of work done by Linfield students, was held in various locations around campus. The work included student performances, set design, and research in the social and behavioral sciences and the natural sciences.
