Linfield will host the inaugural TEDxMcMinnville on Saturday, Jan 26. The day-long event, featuring eight speakers and three performers, is the first of its kind in McMinnville and organized by local volunteers.
Kitri (Culbertson) McGuire ‘03, head organizer, hopes the event will serve as a platform for community members to address and manage change in McMinnville.
“It’s our intention at TEDxMcMinnville to share big ideas relevant to our region, build community, and spark conversations through engaging speakers, entertaining performances, and a few fun surprises,” McGuire adds.
McGuire is joined behind the scenes by others with Linfield ties including Lacey Dykgraaf ‘16, Delanie Strauss ‘20 and Beth Garcia, director of conference & event planning at Linfield.
The event will also feature two Linfield community members behind the microphone. Gerardo Ochoa, director of community relations, will speak about the impact of mispronouncing a name and David Sumner, professor of English, will discuss how to disagree productively.
The theme “Under the Microscope” will prompt speakers to “look below the surface” and share ideas that are relevant to the communities in Yamhill County.
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
