Author and poet Luis Alberto Urrea will visit Linfield University in May.Update May 1, 2022:  Unfortunately, the visit from Luis Alberto Urrea has been postponed until fall. More information will come when a new schedule is confirmed.

Critically acclaimed and award-winning author Luis Alberto Urrea will read from and discuss his work on the Linfield University McMinnville Campus at 5:30 p.m. May 3 in the Jereld R. Nicholson Library.

Urrea’s visit is part of the Mac Reads Series, a collaborative partnership between Linfield, the McMinnville Public Library and Third Street Books with the goal of inspiring community-wide conversations around a topic. Continue reading

Spotlighting Women’s History Month at Linfield University

Linfield will honor the contributions of women striving to make a better, brighter future for everyone with a series of Women’s History Month events throughout March. 

Upcoming events, which are free and open to the public, are: 

 • Women in Sports – A panel discussion: 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 15 in the Fred Meyer Lounge. Join graduate student moderator Alana Nuttman ’21 for a discussion featuring women in sports. Special guests include Assistant Professor Natalie Welch, Associate Athletic Director Jane Samuels, Kara Adams, director of guest experience for the Portland Trailblazers and Jen Anderson, vice president of people and culture for the Hillsboro Hops.

Readings at the Nick with Kathryn Nuernberger: Witches, forced confessions and current conversations

Author Kathryn Nuernberger will be a featured guest of the Readings at the Nick series March 15. In her latest essay collection, “The Witch of Eye,” essayist and poet Kathryn Nuernberger deconstructs the myths of witches and how their “trials” were repeated throughout history to the present day.

At 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 15, Nuernberger will be reading from and discussing her work as part of Linfield University‘s free Readings at the Nick. Readings are held in the Jereld R. Nicholson Library Austin Reading Room on the McMinnville campus. Face masks are required inside all Linfield buildings.

Linfield University events celebrate Black History Month

Linfield Artist in Residence Kahili Pedizisai will take part in a panel discussion on building community Feb. 8.

Linfield University will host a series of events in celebration of Black History Month, Feb. 8-25. All events are organized by the Black Student Union (BSU) and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

The activities will culminate in the BSU’s first-ever Black Wall Street, a festival for Black-owned clothing designers, artists, craftspeople and restaurateurs to promote and sell their goods on Linfield’s McMinnville campus. Black Wall Street is slated for 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25. A concert featuring Portland-based rappers Donte Thomas and Bocha will cap the event.

OSHA adds new rule for working in high heat

Oregon Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) has issued an emergency/temporary rule that builds upon and clarifies worker protections against the hazards of high and extreme heat in the workplace. The rule utilizes the heat index, which is often called the “feels like” temperature in weather reports and is a measure of how the relative humidity combined with the air temperature are felt by the human body. Updates regarding Linfield’s Title IX policies

Linfield University banner on campusWe have updated our Title IX policies to comply with new federal guidelines and to incorporate recommendations made by the President’s Sexual Assault Task Force. The new Title IX policy can be found here.

An important part of this process has been the creation of a Title IX working group consisting of students, faculty members and staff members to gather feedback, ensure our policies are clear and address the most pressing concerns of all university stakeholders. This group met during the summer with an outside consultant who specializes in Title IX and Oregon Sexual Misconduct Law. Board of Trustees update

Dear Linfield community,

We have closely watched the unrest among some students and faculty in recent months over alleged misconduct by members of the Linfield University Board of Trustees. We understand this has caused anxiety within our community and led to division and suspicion during a summer in which we can’t gather easily for discussion.

Given the information that has been circulated to date, students have every right to feel upset. However, we have grave concerns about the amount of misinformation that has been sown throughout the community in recent months. Continue reading
