The Linfield University Science Complex and W.M. Keck Science Center are now open

Linfield students, faculty and President Davis moments after cutting a purple ribbon with giant wood scissors.After nearly 10 years of planning and 19 months of construction, the new Linfield University Science Complex, featuring the brand-new W.M. Keck Science Center, is officially open. The 84,400-square-foot complex gives Linfield students the chance to do high levels of undergraduate research, whether that’s mutations to mitochondrial DNA or fermentation in the Evenstad Wine Laboratory. Research space has increased 232%, from 2,318 square feet to 5,385 square feet. Continue reading

Inclusion advocate and strategist Amanda Wittstrom Higgins to speak at Wine Lecture Series March 1

A complimentary wine reception begins at 5:30 p.m., with the lecture to follow at 6 p.m in Nicholson Library (location) on Linfield’s McMinnville campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Wittstrom Higgins is the founder of Dream Big Darling, a 501(c)3 dedicated to mentoring, educating and retaining women in the wine industry, as well as the owner of Full Cup Solutions, “a full-service consulting firm for agriculture and beverage industry businesses eager to build impactful and unconventional strategies for the future.” Continue reading

President Miles K. Davis announces creation of scholarship for Jamaican students

Davis announced in a speech Thursday that starting with the 2023-24 academic year, the university will offer up to five “last dollar” scholarships to students from Jamaica. The scholarships can be for as much as full tuition and fees and will be offered with an emphasis on students interested in the creative arts.  

He made the announcement during his keynote address to the Creative Career Expo, an annual event from the Jamaican Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport. The event draws hundreds of students interested in studying creative fields to the Jamaica Conference Centre in the capital city of Kingston.  Continue reading

Oregon Nobel Laureate Symposium returns to Linfield Feb. 23-24 after 10-year hiatus

Established at Linfield by President Emeritus Charles Walker in 1985 after a major gift from an anonymous donor, the symposium has drawn 21 Nobel award winners to the McMinnville campus. Past speakers include Elie Wiesel (Nobel Peace Prize, 1986), Linus Pauling (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 1954; Nobel Peace Prize, 1962) and Oscar Arias (Nobel Peace Prize, 1987), among others. The last symposium was held in 2013.

“Linfield is one of a very small group of universities The Nobel Foundation authorized to hold these symposia, and we are honored and excited to revive this rich tradition,” Linfield President Miles K. Davis said. “These gatherings give students the opportunity to converse directly with some of the most brilliant minds on earth.” Continue reading

Third Angle brings contemporary classical, new student compositions to Linfield Nov. 30 and Dec. 1

Third Angle, a Portland-based group that plays contemporary classical music, will perform two concerts at Linfield University and provide masterclasses to students as part of the Lacroute Composer Readings and Chamber Music Mentorship program. The small chamber ensemble will play Wednesday, Nov. 30, then debut original student compositions on Thursday, Dec. 1.

Annual Lu’au & Ho’ike draws nearly 1,000 attendees

Linfield University's Hui O Lōkahi Club held its 49th Annual Lu'au & Ho'ike Saturday, April 30.Months of rehearsals and planning led to the 49th Annual Lu’au & Ho’ike Saturday, April 30. For Puna Padayhag-Himalaya, co-chair of the event presented by the Hui O Lōkahi Club, it was all worth it.

“I think for every one of our dancers, last night held a special place in their hearts. Just being back in the gym … there is something about the stage, lighting and decorations that really creates this unique ambiance that really sets the tone,” Padayhag-Himalaya said. “In the end, it was truly a special moment as a senior and closing off with one last performance on the center stage.”

Critically acclaimed and award-winning author Luis Alberto Urrea will read from and discuss his work on the Linfield University McMinnville Campus at 5:30 p.m. May 3 in the Jereld R. Nicholson Library.

Urrea’s visit is part of the Mac Reads Series, a collaborative partnership between Linfield, the McMinnville Public Library and Third Street Books with the goal of inspiring community-wide conversations around a topic. Continue reading

Student lu’au returns for 49th year in McMinnville April 30

A Linfield University student performs a fire dance at the 2021 Lūʻau & Hōʻike.A celebration of the gods and goddesses of Hawaii will be threaded throughout the 49th annual Lūʻau & Hōʻike at Linfield University from Saturday, April 30.

Every year, Linfield’s Hui o Lōkahi (formerly Hawai’i Club) shares the culture of the Polynesian islands through food, dance and more. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. performances are available online at www.linfieldtickets.com. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $20 for students with ID, seniors and children 3-12 who need their own seat. Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test (taken within 72 hours prior to the event) are required for entry.

“It has been so long since we had a regular Lūʻau and many of our underclassmen have never seen what a true Linfield Lūʻau is like. This year it truly feels like a full-circle moment,” said Puna Padayhag-Himalaya, a student co-chair of the event. “My hope for this year’s Lūʻau is for everyone to see the amazing community we have here at Linfield that celebrates the Polynesian culture. My larger hope is that it will inspire our underclassmen to get involved in the following years.”

‘Heathers The Musical’ on stage at Linfield

April will see Linfield University theatre program, in collaboration with the Department of Music, produce its first musical in three years.

“Heathers The Musical” hits the Marshall Theatre stage with performances April 21-23 and April 28-30. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. each night with 2 p.m. matinees on April 24 and May 1.

Ticket prices are $15 for full admission, $13 for seniors, faculty and staff (two per ID) and $10 for any student with a school ID and available online at www.linfield.edu/arts/theatre.html and at the Marshall Theatre Box Office located in Ford Hall box beginning April 15. Seating is reserved.
