Laptop Checkout Policy - Nicholson Library only
MacIntosh laptops are available and may be borrowed from the circulation desk located at the entrance of Nicholson Library for use within the library.
Borrowing the Laptop
To borrow a laptop you must be currently enrolled at or employed by Linfield College (student, faculty, or staff) with a VALID Linfield ID card. Your student status must be current in the library’s online circulation system. You will also need to sign a form each year acknowledging responsibility for the laptop while it is in your possession. To sign in to a laptop, you will need a CatNet ID and password (your Linfield email login and password).
Returning the laptop
Each laptop will undergo a short check-in and check-out process that requires your presence. We will be checking the laptop and any accompanying equipment. To expedite this process, please return your laptop turned ON and make sure you have saved your work or printed it out.
Laptop must be returned at least a half hour before the circulation desk closes.
Loan Periods and Hours of Program
- Laptops may be borrowed for two hours. They may be renewed as long as no one is waiting for a laptop. To renew your laptop, bring the computer or your Linfield ID to the circulation desk.
- Laptops may not be reserved.
- There is a charge of $10 per hour for any laptop not returned on time. Fines accrue beginning immediately at two hours.
Laptops are available for check out from the circulation desk near the entrance to Nicholson Library during the following hours for Fall and Spring Semesters:
Monday- Thursday: 7:30am - 12:00am
Friday: 7:30am- 7:00pm
Saturday: 10:00am- 7:00pm
Sunday: noon- 12:00am

Every person checking out a laptop will sign a form each year acknowledging responsibility for the laptop while in his/her possession. The wording of the term will read:
You are responsible for any loss or damage to a laptop and peripherals checked out to you.
If the laptop or its peripherals are damaged, there is a charge plus a processing fee equivalent to the full replacement cost as determined by library staff. Late fines are assessed at $10.00 per hour. These charges will be billed at a full replacement fee of $1,000 plus $125 for peripherals as noted above.

Turning the laptop ON and OFF:
Thepower button for the laptop is a circle located directly above the keyboard in the top right hand corner. The laptop may be turned off or logged off under Apple icon in the upper left corner.
Software Available on Laptop
Laptops come installed with Firefox and Safari web browsers, Adobe Reader, Mathematica, Skype and a number of other programs. Once you log in, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point are available from the Dock located at the bottom of the laptop screen. A triangle below the program icon at the bottom of the screen indicates the Program is active. To quit the program, choose its name at the top of the screen next to File and select exit.
Battery Power/Status:In the case that your laptop battery is not fully charged upon checkout or becomes low during use, a battery charger is supplied with the laptop. It will allow you to plug your computer into a variety of outlets, both in the floor near the tables and on walls located throughout Nicholson Library. The adapter connects to the laptop on the left side of the computer.
You can check the battery icon in the toolbar to see the battery’s status. If the laptop battery is running low, a pop-up window will notify you. At that point you can either plug in the laptop or print documents, save them to your USB or Catfiles, or email them to yourself.
Wireless Network Availability
When you turn on the computer you will be automatically connected to the wireless network. To access the computer, however, you must enter your Linfield logon and Password when prompted to do so. Logout can be found under the Apple icon in the top left of the computer.
Printing or Saving Your Work
IMPORTANT: Any work you save to the computer will disappear once you log out.
You can print documents from the Circulating laptops to the reference room printer located near the front of the library. You can also print to the EMS desk color printer, the instruction room or the reference desk. For each black and white page printed, your student account will be charged $0.05, for each color page printed, your student account will be charged $0.25.
If you want to save without printing, you can email your work to yourself as an attachment to be printed at a later time. You may also save your work to a USB drive or to CatFiles (which also requires a Linfield login and password and may be accessed through the Current Students drop down menu).
Remember: once you log out of the laptop, your work will be lost, so make arrangements to print, save to a USB or Catfiles, or email documents to yourself BEFORE you log out.
Personal laptops may also access the wireless network. Staff, students and faculty may access the wireless network Nicholson Library with their Linfield login and password, other patrons may access the internet by connecting to Catnet Public. The Library is not able to support personal laptop use in the library beyond providing the wireless network.

Q: For what length of time can I borrow a laptop?
A: A laptop may be checked out for two hours at a time. They may be renewed as long as no one is waiting for a laptop. All laptops are due to the Circulation Desk one half hour before the library closes.
Q: Can I put a laptop on hold or recall a laptop from a borrower?
A: At this time, we are not able to place holds or recalls on laptops.
Q: What is the latest I can check out a laptop?
A: They may be checked out any time up to an hour before closing.
Q: How do I print from a laptop?
A: You may print as you would using any computer; one way is from the file menu. Documents will print from the printer you select, either the EMS desk, the circulation desk, the reference desk, or the instruction room.
Q: Where can I connect the laptop to the campus network?
A: The wireless laptop will connect to the network automatically when you turn it on. You will need to login with your Linfield logon and password, however, to use the laptop.
Q: What if I cannot access the Internet?
A: Problems with connecting to the internet rarely occur. If problems arise, please see someone at the Circulation desk for assistance.
Q: Can I take the laptop out of the building?
A: No, laptops not are allowed to leave the building
Q: Who can help me with other network, hardware and software questions?
A: Problems with you network connection or with laptop hardware or software should be brought to the attention of staff at the Circulation Desk. For help with database selection and searching, ask at the Reference Desk located across from circulation. If you need a wireless card for your personal laptop of have questions about getting a campus account to allow you access to the wireless network, please contact Integrated Technology Services at X2553.
Do not leave your laptop computer (or other valuables) unattended, even for a few seconds. Theft of laptops and peripherals can occur in the Nicholson Library. You will be held responsible if the laptop you have checked out is stolen.
