Student Cyber Safety

Whether you open your laptop to take notes in lecture halls, or log in to your classes on your computer, cyber safety is important for every student. To celebrate National Cyber Security Month, we are giving you all the tips and tricks to protect yourself from cyber-attacks.

Secure Your Laptop and Cell

One of the most common crimes on college campuses, is technology theft. Make sure you never leave your laptop in your car, or unattended in a public area. You can also invest in a laptop tracking software (ie. Find my Mac).

Make sure you never keep any personal info on your laptop, such as SSN, passwords, birth certificates, or driver’s license. If you do keep this info in your computer ensure that it is encrypted. Also make sure your phone and laptop are password protected.

Be Password Smart

If your password is 123456, passw0rd, or something simple like your birth year, you are acting as cyber hacking bait. For a password to be strong you should have a mix of capital and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.  In addition you should also change your passwords every six months, and make sure your passwords are not the same for all of your accounts. If you need to write down your passwords, make sure they are not stored near your devices.

Avoid Phishing Attacks

This is one of the most common cyber hacking methods. Hackers will send links through text messages or emails. Never open an email from a suspicious or unknown address, and if there is a link in any email you receive, instead of clicking on it, type it into your search bar instead. Phishers are able to hide different links with quick link addresses. Phishers will also play on your fears and send messages such as “You owe the IRS…” or “Your account is about to be terminated…” If you have concern about these, you can always follow up with a phone call.

Social Media Safety

Social Media plays a major role in cyber security threats. For example, to keep yourself safe, never post personal information such as phone number, address, birth date, address, or name of your school. This information could be communicated in photos too, so comb through those to make sure you are safe. Make sure your privacy settings are set at the highest level, as hackers are able to gain a lot of information from public accounts.

“I love technology!” Hammond said. “So when my online classes utilize all that is available online, it makes for a better learning experience for me.”

As advice to future students, Hammond suggests a self-starter spirit and a dependable Wi-Fi connection. “As much as I love technology, it will fail you when you need it the most. You have to plan ahead. I was moving cross-country when I needed to take a [three-hour long] final online and was going to depend on hotel Wi-Fi. I worked with the front desk to make sure I had the ability to have a direct connection that was more predictable.” With her new credentials and her ambition, Hammond has a fulfilling accounting career ahead of her.
