Computer science majors at Linfield have had a 100% acceptance rate into internships at Intel, the U.S. Air Force Reserve, Micron Technologies, Pacific Northwest National Lab, Fred Meyer, Weyerhaeuser Company, and Linfield Information Technology Services.
Internships in computer science vary widely. Interns can apply their skills at small start-up companies or even at larger corporations. They allow students the opportunity to learn new programming languages and explore subfields such as software engineering and computer graphics.
Previously, Linfield graduates have interned at companies such as Google, Go Daddy, Nike, and Intel. They have also participated in Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs at other institutions. Alternatively, students can apply to work as on-campus computer technicians, who install and maintain software on the college’s computers.
Here are examples of places students have interned:
- Digital Foundry
- Dotcast Inc.
- Go Daddy
- Griggs Anderson Research
- Insitu Inc.
- Intel Corporation
- LVSYS Corp.
- Mentor Graphics
- Rasmussen Software Inc.
- U.S. Department of Defense
The Computer Science Department strongly encourages students to complete an internship before graduation. In addition to gaining hands-on experience, some students are offered full-time positions upon completing their internship. Students can choose to intern for academic credit by enrolling in the departmental internship course (COMP 487). Additionally, the Office for Career Development provides career counselling, tools, and resources to help students explore opportunities in computer science. The office connects students to employers by hosting seminars, informal lunches with alumni, and career fairs.
