Physical Education, a Portland Based artist group, were in residence for a full semester at Linfield College. Their time produced a series of performances, workshops and two exhibitions, Futility of Preparedness and History is a Hole.
Futility of Preparedness
This project addresses the phenomenology of disaster planning, considering how the language of necessity, survival, and the informed create meaning in different contexts. Through a mix or workshops and events, the group activates different community groups to consider how this language functions in relation to speculation, paranoia and the world of information, resources and materials.
By including both the imaginative unfathomable and the spoken, researched inevitable, Futility of Preparedness brings into focus the idea of the self in its immediacy, in the current now, the currents of weather, in what is currently seismic.
History is a Hole
A continuation of a chain-curation performance series first mounted at PNCA’s Center for Contemporary Art and Culture in 2017, This exhibition extended an invitation to artists/students at Linfield College to contribute to the making of a multimedia installation that ultimately arrived at a collaborative performance.
