Alumni Profile: Thomas Sybouts '80
Dalian American International School
Major: Physical Education
What are you doing now?
Currently teaching in Dalian, China at the Dalian American International School, with my wife Melissa. She is teaching middle school history and English and I am teaching high school physical education and serving as head girls' soccer coach. We are in our fifth year. This has been a fantastic experience for us.
Tell us about yourself.
After graduation in 1980, I started teaching and coaching in the Vancouver School District. In 2012, my wife and I decided to teach abroad. We have five sons between us ranging in age from 21 to 28. I still keep track of the Wildcats via the internet and wear purple every Friday and Saturday in the fall to support the football program. My mom, who is 83 years old, still has season tickets to the home football games. My greatest memories are my years playing in the Catdome.
How did Linfield help prepare you for your career?
Linfield gave me the tools for dealing with life. Linfield is not just a place for gaining knowledge -- it is more than that. One of the best teachers I had was Ad Rutschman (and the Linfield football program). I am the person I am today because of Linfield and Ad Rutschman.
