English Language Test Preparation Courses: Intermediate Level

Prepare to take English placement tests like the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Focus on listening to conversations in social and academic contexts, speaking in response to both written and spoken questions, building academic vocabulary, identifying views and logic, learning the structure and directions of both tests, writing answers and much more. Online practice, digital handouts and online readings will help you prepare.

Offered in four-week sessions with 27 hours of practice and assignments per course.

Course descriptions

These four-week sessions allow you to study when it's convenient for you. Each session includes 27 hours of practice, weekly due dates for assignments and a final practice test during the last week of the course. Receive personal written feedback from your instructor and schedule online meetings with other students. Must have internet access and a device with a mic and camera.

Reading and writing

Focus on building academic vocabulary, identifying views and logic, learning the structure and directions of both tests, writing both short and long answers using complete sentences, writing sentences, paragraphs and short essays, and identifying main ideas and types of details.

Meet your instructor

Kevin BowlesKevin Bowles received his master’s degree in applied linguistics: teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Portland State University in 2010. He has taught argument and critical discourse, English communication and test prep courses in both the US and Japan. Currently, he is working with OHSU to develop health communication courses on cultural competency and non-verbal communication. At Linfield University he teaches English Language and Culture Program (ELCP) courses and writing, reading and grammar courses for an academic context. Finally, he has 17 years of experience teaching ESOL prep courses for GRE, SAT, TOEFL and IELTS.

Meet your instructor

Verena Sutherland, M.Ed.Verena Sutherland, M.Ed. with a focus on English for Speakers of Other Languages, has been teaching English language learners of all levels for more than 15 years and has in this time helped many students achieve higher scores on language tests, such as the IELTS or TOEFL tests. Having been involved with the IELTS test for more than five years and having taken the IELTS test herself with a score of a Band 9, she knows what it takes to succeed.

In addition to fine-tuning students' listening and speaking skills, Verena also focuses on improving test-taking skills to help students avoid losing unnecessary points and increase confidence.

English Language Test Preparation courses at Linfield University are not for credit. Intermediate courses are aimed at IELTS 4.5-6.0 or TOEFL 60-75. Choose to focus on listening, speaking, reading or writing skills. Please contact our office with additional questions.
