September Faculty Lecture

Kaarina Beam will kick off the Linfield College Faculty Lecture Series when she presents “Is Truth Dead? Fact you!” on Wednesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Fred Meyer Lounge, Riley Hall (please note the change in location).

Kaarina will talk about the nature of truth, the nature of truth-seeking education, and the nature of the philosophy underlying an educational search for truth in a pluralistic world. Please see Kaarina’s promo video for more information.

Resources for Pre-Nursing Students

Refer pre-nursing students, whether advisees or students in your classes, to take advantage of nursing-specific resources on the McMinnville campus. These include:

  • Meeting with Nursing faculty and Portland campus administrators during advising drop-in.
  • Attending Nursing and health-related presentations by Nursing faculty.
  • Participating in group advising sessions led by pre-nursing peer advisors.

Details and schedules regarding the above opportunities, and much more, are available on the pre-nursing webpage.

Academic Alerts and Care Reports

There are two tools available to faculty and staff to assist students who are experiencing difficulties. These tools are routed differently to staff members who are able to help students effectively. It is sometimes appropriate to submit both reports for a single student.

Academic Alerts: If a student is earning less than a “C” in a course, the Academic Alert system in WebAdvisor should be used. This tool notifies the student, their advisor, and the Academic Advising office that the student requires additional academic support.

Though it is early in the semester, McMinnville and Portland faculty can begin using Academic Alerts now, as early intervention can be particularly helpful. Faculty unfamiliar with the academic alert system should contact Ellen Crabtree at

Care Reports: If a student seems to be struggling, is frequently absent, or exhibits behavior that concerns you, please submit a Student of Concern/Care Report. These reports are reviewed by the Dean of Students’ Office and routed to the Student Success Committee. This group meets weekly to analyze care reports and assign appropriate individuals or offices for follow-up, for students, depending on the type of care needed. Care Reports may be filed by students, faculty, or staff. Questions regarding Care Reports should be addressed to Jeff Mackay or Susan Hopp.

Discipline-Specific Guidelines on Blackboard

The Promotion and Tenure Subcommittee, working with Academic Affairs, continues to post drafts of departmental guidelines on Blackboard fora.

Once you enroll in the fora, the Departmental Guidelines will appear on your Blackboard course list.

When a guideline is approved by the Promotion and Tenure Subcommittee and the Dean of Faculty, we close comments on the guideline’s Blackboard forum and post the approved discipline-specific guideline on the Faculty Resources webpage.

Please contact Personnel Committee Chair Stephen Bricher at to request instructions on self-enrollment.

Guest Housing

Faculty and Staff conducting college business on the McMinnville campus are welcome to use an on-campus apartment, Frerichs 104, free of charge. The office of Conference & Event Planning will manage the registration, check-in and check-out process, with the help of our campus scheduling software, 25Live. Faculty and staff will be able to conveniently view real-time availability and make reservations through the system. In an effort to maintain the privacy of our guests, only faculty and staff members have the ability to see reservation details.

The apartment includes two twin beds, desk, closet, dresser, sofa/coffee table, kitchenette and private ensuite restroom. All reservations will include a pillow, bed linen and bath towels.

Log in to 25Live to make your reservation or send a request email to Reserve at at least one week in advance with:

  • Guest’s name, title and department
  • Arrival and departure dates and times

Once the reservation is complete, a confirmation email will be sent outlining check-in and check-out procedures.

The housing benefit is intended for non-routine accommodations, to be used by all faculty and staff, and there is limited availability.
