Academic Year Component

During the academic year, Upward Bound staff contact students weekly at their schools.  These sessions allow staff to monitor student attendance and progress.  It also allows participants to request special counseling or tutoring assistance. 

Tutoring sessions are conducted on a weekly basis during the school year.  Participants are transported in Linfield College vehicles to the college campus where they receive two hours of tutoring.  The tutors are current Linfield students with excellent academic skills and tutoring abilities.  Staff members are also selected specifically for their potential as being positive role-models in the UB students’ lives.  In addition to personalized tutoring, participants also have access to the college library and computer labs. 

If students maintain acceptable school and tutoring attendance and continue to make academic progress each month, they receive a $10.00 stipend for each tutoring session attended up to a maximum of $40.00 each month.  Students who fail to maintain a 2.50 GPA and/or do not demonstrate sufficient academic progress will face suspension or expulsion from the program.
