Background and history about Upward Bound
School Year Program:
This program, also referred to as the "Academic Year Component" operates
thoughout the school year. Its main focus is helping students increase their
academic skills, improve feelings of self worth and work towards eventual enrollment
in a post-secondary program.
Summer School Program:
The summer session is an intensive six week, residential program designed to improve
student knowledge and skills in such subjects as English, reading, math, foreign
language, social studies, study skills and science.
The "Bridge" Program:
The Bridge program is for Upward Bound students who are graduating high school
seniors. It is an intensive program designed to prepare these students for entry
into post-secondary education. Students who participate in this summer program must have applied to, been accepted to, and plan to attend a post-secondary institution in the fall.
Upward Bound History
Prior to 1965, disadvantaged students in the U.S. faced a number of barriers in pursuit of a post secondary education. Opportunities for disadvantaged students were nearly non-existent in Yamhill County until 1970 when Linfield College began its first Upward Bound Program. Now, four decades later, it remains a highly successful program responsible for assisting over nearly one thousand Yamhill County disadvantaged students in fulfilling their dreams of a post secondary education.
Upward Bound operates successfully as a team player. It has enjoyed on-going, cooperative relationships with area school district, various governmental bodies and the community at-large since 1970. Together, this partnership provides a positive support system of education, counseling, and personal enrichment for disadvantaged students seeking post-secondary education opportunities.
With help from its partners, Upward Bound recruits capable, disadvantaged students and prepares them educationally and emotionally for the rigors of a post-secondary education. It also helps students overcome such formidable barriers as learning disabilities, physical handicaps, cultural and financial related problems.
The six schools Upward Bound serves in Yamhill County are Amity, Dayton, McMinnville, Newberg, Sheridan and Willamina.
