Applying to the Program

Upward Bound Student Selection Procedure

In order to be considered a prospective Upward Bound student, applicants must be enrolled in some form of secondary school and must not have reached their senior year.  New students will only be brought into the program during the school year and will be selected using the following criteria:

  • They must have a genuine interest in and the potential for success in high school and post-secondary education.
  • The family income must meet federal low-income guidelines.
  • The student must be a potential first generation college graduate (neither parent can have received a four-year degree).
  • Despite having a satisfactory academic record, the student’s future enrollment in a college program is unlikely due to personal, familial, and/or social factors.  In this program, a “satisfactory academic record” usually means that a student should have a 2.50 GPA or better.

In addition to meeting the above conditions, all prospective students must participate in a minimum of four consecutive sessions of academic year tutoring so that program staff can assess the student’s skill, motivation, need for and interest in program services and the likelihood of success in a post-secondary setting.
