Wireless Networking at Linfield

These pages answer questions about technology requirements and services provided by the Integrated Technology Services Department at Linfield College. ITS is responsible for many aspects of computing and data communications for students, faculty, and staff.

Linfield College recognizes the need to provide students with a high quality computing environment. All student's residence hall rooms have Linfield Network Connections along with Wireless Network access in many public areas of the campus. We have two computer labs for general student use open 24 hrs/ 7 days a week, several stand - up computer stations around campus for e-mail, and a number of academic deparments have computers available for student use.

Anytime you have a question that is not answered here, or you need more information, feel free to contact us by email at support@linfield.edu or by phone at (503) 883-2553.

Student Email Accounts

New Students must create a CATNet ID which will be used for their Linfield email. Students may apply online for CATNet ID/email. Your Student ID number or Social Security number is required to process the request. Your email address will generally be your first initial followed by up to 6 letter of your last name followed by @linfield.edu.

Linfield Students use WebMail at https://exchange.linfield.edu to access the Linfield College email system (current Linfield CATNet ID requied).

Student Public Lab/Library Accounts

Any current Linfield student has a lab/library account which means access and use with public computers located in the Nicholson Library, Miller Fine Arts Computer Lab, and Renshaw Hall Comptuer Lab. This account is your CatNet ID. You also have 2GB of network disk space (CatFiles) available in which to store documents along with printing privileges in the public computer labs and library. Linfield has a system that tracks printing on public/networked printers and charges for printing. You have an allotment of $25 of public/network printing per school year. Monochrome printers charge five cents per sheet. Color printers charge fifty cents per sheet. Print jobs in excess of the $25 yearly allotment will be charged to your student account.

Personal Computers

Minimum Requirements, Recommendations and Purchasing

Linfield supports Apple/Mac and Windows platforms (See minimum Requirements and Recommendations) A personal computer is not necessary although many students find owning one helpful. The computers in the on-campus public labs meet the needs of a large number of students, especially during the first year. Having a printer is convenient though not necessary. All on-campus labs have printers available.
New Macintosh computers ordered from the Linfield Bookstore during the summer will be available for pickup in the bookstore during Orientation.
The bookstore offers educational discounts and on-campus warranty for any Mac computer purchased through them. Ethernet cables and software will also be available for purchase.
Please refer to the Linfield Bookstore for more information regarding ordering or shipping computers.

Connecting to the McMinnville Linfield Network

Modems are unnecessary in student residence halls as all rooms come equipped with ethernet connections (wireless available in some residence halls). Ethernet cables are available for purchase in the LInfield Bookstore.
When students arrive on campus, those who have Windows operating systems will need to install Cisco Clean Access software (a network authentication and validation security system) and may need to change their network configuration before they are able to access the Linfield network. The Cisco Clean Access software will require all current Critical Microsoft Updates and a current Anti-Virus program with the latest Anti-Virus Updates to be installed before the student owned Windows computer will be allowed to connect to the Linfield Network. Cisco Clean Access recognizes many anti-virus programs, among them are McAfee**, Norton, AVG, Avast, and TrendMicro. Click here for a Complete AV List. Students who have Apple/Mac operating systems will only need to register on the Linfield network with their CATNet ID's which can be done when you access the Linfield network via any web browser. Apple/Mac computers Do Not require Cisco Clean Access software installed at this time.
**McAfee is provided for McMinnville Linfield On Campus Student Residents Only at no charge once your arrive on campus. Click for additional McAfee information.

If you have problems configuring your computer, contact the ITS Support Desk at ext. 2553 or support@linfield.edu. Configuration services are provided at no charge. Just drop off your laptop (with power cord) or your desktop CPU (we don't need the monitor, mouse, keyboard, or cables) at Mac Hall, room 106. There is generally a two to three day wait before completion.
