Network Configuration Guide for Linfield Campus

Connecting to the Linfield Network

Make sure your computer is plugged into the network via Ethernet with an Ethernet Cable.

Phone cords will not work in the Ethernet jacks.

Windows Vista
  • Open Start -> Control Panel.
    • (Home View layout - choose Network & Internet -> Network and Sharing Center OR Classic View layout - choose Network and Sharing).
  • Double Click on Manage Network Connection.
  • Right Click on your ethernet connection (usually Local Area Connection/LAN) -> select Properties.
    **If a User Account Control dialog window appears asking for permission to continue, click Continue button**
  • Click on/Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCO/IP/4) -> click Properties button.
  • Select Obtain an IP address Automatically.
  • Select Obtain DNS server address Automatically.
  • Click OK button.
  • Click Close button.
  • Close any open windows.

Windows XP/2000

  • Open Start -> Control Panel.
    • (Classic View layout - choose Network Connections OR Category View layout - choose Network and Internet connections -> Network Connections).
  • Right click on your ethernet connection (usually Local Area Connection/LAN) -> select Properties.
  • Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> click Properties button.
  • Select Obtain an IP address Automatically.
  • Select Obtain DNS server address Automatically.
  • Click OK button.
  • Restart your computer if necessary.

Windows ME
  • Open Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  • Open the Network control panel.
  • Click on the TCP/IP entry for your Ethernet card (ex: "Realtek RTL8139/810x ->TCP/IP") -> click Properties button.
  • On the dialog box that appears, scroll through all the tabs. On each tab, make sure that any available choices are set to 'Automatic' and no manual specification of network addresses are present (this includes IP address, DNS settings, gateway addresses, etc.
  • Close dialog box.
  • Open Start -> Run.
  • In Run field type winipcfg -> click Enter button.
  • Select your Ethernet card in the drop down list and click Release. The IP address, etc should reset to 0.0.0.0
  • Click Renew. A new IP address should appear along with the necessary network information.
  • Click OK.

Mac OS X
  • Apple menu (located at the top left corner of the desktop) -> System Preferences.
  • Select Show All (located in the top left corner).
  • In Internet & Network section, click on Network.
    • For 10.3 users, make sure that "show' is set to 'Built -in Ethernet'.
  • Click on the TCP/IP tab.
  • Configure is set to Using DHCP.
  • Search Domains field type in linfield. edu
  • Click Apply Now button.
  • Close the Network window.
