Catalog Description: Information, methods and resources for planning and implementing peer health education programs for alcohol and drug prevention.
Course Description: This course will provide students with the necessary background to be peer health educators to reduce underage and high risk drinking. The desired outcome of this course is to bring students to the point where they can effectively plan, implement and evaluate prevention strategies including: discussion sessions presented to their peers, Friday Night Activities, and media to correct misperceptions. The training will focus on three areas: knowledge about alcohol and its effects; promising practices for prevention; and implementing prevention programs (planning, marketing, communicating, critical thinking, facilitating discussion, and building trust).
Requirements:
Class Attendance: Active participation. No more than two (2) absences; complete work before next session. 11 classes minimum. 55 points.
Weekly Reflections: Weekly reflections to choices@linfield.edu, even if absent. 12 assignments. 120 points.
Special Event: Attend two meetings/events and submit a one-page reflection for each. 2 assignments. 30 points.
Game Presentation: This project will be the final. Make a presentation of one of the four games (Taboo, Outburst, Cranium, Bingo) to a group of six or more students and write a one page reflection paper. Project partner must be cleared by instructor in advance. 45 points.
Behavior: As a peer educator you are observed as a student role model and a resource. To sustain the credibility of the program, we ask that all peer educators who choose to drink, follow low risk guidelines, in addition to college policy and state laws. Facebook: Please amend the content of your Facebook profile to align with these behavior standards (removing any unacceptable photos, declining membership to inappropriate groups, etc). We will be using this electronic tool for class; it is important that you set an example here as well. If we can see it, anyone else can too!

Special Accommodations: Students with disabilities are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. If you are a student with a disability and feel you may require academic accommodations contact Cheri White, Assistant Director of Learning Support Services (LSS), within the first two weeks of the semester to request accommodations. LSS is located in Walker 124 (503-883-2444). We also recommend students communicate with their faculty about their accommodations and any special needs an instructor should be aware of.
Academic Honesty: All students enrolled in this course are expected to adhere to the college policy on academic honesty, as published in the Linfield College Course Catalog. If unsure about whether your work reflects an appropriate level of “academic honesty” do not hesitate to discuss the matter with the instructor before the work is started.
Illness/Medical Policy: Please email the instructor AND stay home if you are not feeling well (fever, aches, etc) to prevent the spread of illnesses like seasonal and H1N1 flu viruses. Linfield has established a flu alert page on the web: http://www.linfield.edu/flu.html
