Meet Caleb Kearns
Class: Senior
Major: Creative Writing, Theatre Arts
Hometown: Dayton, Ore.
Q: How would you describe Linfield College.
Caleb: Linfield was an unforgettable experience. Never once have I looked back and regretted my decision to come here. It has given me more valuable tools than the prices I have paid for them. And the students here are really putting themselves in a position of future success.
Q: Linfield doesn’t have a lot of obvious diversity – Do you think that our students are diverse in any way.
Caleb: I think it’s really diverse. The liberal arts college trains you to think differently and to get outside the box. Many people come in here as conservatives or as extreme left wing liberals and they always find a neutral ground. And everyone comes in from different areas. There’s a greater population that comes from the same Northwest environment that everyone has been a part of. But with the exchange students and the travel abroad students, you get a little bit of everything here as long as you don’t hide in your dorms.
Q: What kinds of activities have you been involved with at Linfield.
Caleb: I played a year of football and four years of baseball. I spent four years in the theatre department, and have been a part of seven productions here. I spent time with the Secondary Education department, so student teaching within the area. The SMART programs, which is basically student reading development. KSLC, I had my own radio show sophomore year.
Q: What have been some of your favorite classes, and why?
Caleb: Both of my Ultimate Questions classes: Ultimate Questions in Literature and The Sacred Pilgrimage. The UQ classes here at Linfield are great because they really make you look at what you think and why you think it. They say if you are very firm in your beliefs we'll respect that. But at the same time, is there any opportunity for you to be swayed or any chance you could sway someone else? It's just such an open-ended curriculum that they have.
