Meet Rachel Kaneta

student image Class: 2009

Major: Chemistry

Hometown: Hilo, Hawaii

Q: Do you have any advice for high school seniors about adjusting to college?

Rachel: What helped me was that I went in to talk to professors if I had trouble. I decided I would try to go to their office hours or go to the tutor. That’s where you meet a lot of people and you realize you’re not alone. Talking to people here like your RAs helped too.

Q: How do you feel about the faculty?

Rachel
: That’s the best part. The faculty that I’ve met made me want to stay here. They helped me realize I can take on a challenging major because they’re really supportive. You get to know them personally and they’ll help you out, with school and your future.

Q: What makes or has made Linfield College a valuable experience for you?

Rachel: There are a lot of opportunities here. Some people say if you’re in a bigger school there are so many more opportunities, but also when you’re in a small school you have a chance to be a leader because there are smaller groups. I had a chance to be in a small class where I could be leading a group. It also gave me the internship opportunity and the travel opportunity.

Q: Linfield doesn’t have a lot of obvious diversity – Do you think that our students are diverse in any way?

Rachel: It's pretty diverse. It's kind of an attitude for it to be diverse. People are interested in it and welcoming of it. It's diverse because people like to share their experiences and a lot of students go abroad and bring that experience, which brings in a lot of diversity.
