Linfield College National Science Foundation Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

Physics NotesLinfield College is excited to offer scholarships to support STEM education thanks to the National Science Foundation S-STEM (Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

The amount of each scholarship awarded will vary with financial need, with annual awards ranging to a maximum of $10,000.

We invite students who demonstrate a high grade point average, high grades in math and science courses, a distribution of coursework among math and science offerings, and financial need as demonstrated on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to apply. Particular weight will be given to students who come from underrepresented backgrounds or who are first generation college students. All applicants must intend to major in one of the following:

  • Applied Physics
  • Biology
  • Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Mathematics
  • Physics

How to Apply

Freshman applicants –

  • Apply for Admission to Linfield College by February 1, 2018
  • Submit online S-STEM application to Linfield College by February 1, 2018
  • Submit one reference from a mathematics or natural science instructor by February 1, 2018. The reference should address the student’s motivation, ability to manage time and resources, and communication skills.  The letter should identify the student by the name used on the application for admission and attached to an email addressed to STEM-At-Linfield@linfield.edu
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by the February 1 priority date AND list Linfield College as a recipient of the results
  • Freshman applicants will be notified by April 1 as part of the final, full Linfield College financial aid and scholarship package

Transfer applicants –
Transfer students must have completed 62 transferable credits to be at junior standing by the time they enter Linfield College. Transfer students will be eligible to receive scholarships for two years, but extendable for a third year.

  • Apply for Admission to Linfield College by April 15, 2018
  • Submit online S-STEM application to Linfield College by April 15, 2018
  • Submit one reference from a mathematics or natural science instructor by April 15, 2018.  The reference should address the student’s motivation, ability to manage time and resources, and communication skills.  The letter should identify the student by the name used on the application for admission and attached to an email addressed to STEM-At-Linfield@linfield.edu
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by the April 15 priority date AND list Linfield College as a recipient of the results
  • Transfer applicants will be notified by May 15 as part of the final, full Linfield College financial aid and scholarship package

You should prepare your essay questions in advance in a separate document and plan to cut and paste your responses into the appropriate response windows.

  2. What do you perceive as challenges in pursuing a STEM degree and career?

Scholarship Continuation

To maintain the scholarship, recipients must maintain at least a 3.0 Linfield GPA and make progress towards completing a STEM major by enrolling in at least one math or science class each semester. Students who receive an award, but later change their major to a non-STEM major will not be eligible to keep their award.
