Clayton Truex (Sr., Kirkland, Wash.) has been honored as the Northwest Conference Baseball Student-Athlete of the Week for position players, as announced Monday by the league office following a vote of the conference's sports information directors.
Truex led the Wildcats with a .778 (7-for-9) batting average, .846 on-base percentage and 1.111 slugging percentage in three nonconference games against scholarship programs as part of the CCC/NWC Challenge. In addition to the great statistical numbers, the senior first baseman made a couple of key plays to help his team claim two victories in the tournament. His three-run homer gave Linfield the early lead against St. Martin's in an eventual 6-2 win, and he factored into a double-steal attempt that scored his teammate for the game winning run in a 1-0 victory over Oregon Tech.
Through nine games, Truex is the team leader in average (.387), hits (12) and RBI (10). He has also drawn six walks as part of a team-high .474 on-base percentage while going 2-for-3 on stolen base attempts. This is the second career conference weekly honor for Truex, who also was selected as the league's student-athlete of the week during his freshman campaign.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III and reigning national champions, improved to 7-2, with their only losses coming to Western Oregon (NCAA Division II) and Corban (NAIA).
AHEAD: Linfield begins the Northwest Conference with a three-game series against Pacific beginning with a Saturday doubleheader at noon.
Hits 7-for-9 in three games
