McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Dominating their Northwest Conference opponent in ways seldom seen before, the Linfield Wildcats blanked the Lewis & Clark Pioneers 10-0 and 8-0 Sunday afternoon in two run-rule shortened games that completed a four-game series shutout.
Linfield, the 10-time NWC champion, outscored Lewis & Clark 36-0 in the four games while outhitting the Pioneers 36-4.
The Wildcats begin the new season 4-0. Lewis & Clark, which entered the weekend series with a winning record at 3-2, returned to Portland at 3-6.
GAME 1: Linfield 10, Lewis & Clark 0
Erin Carson (Jr., Camas, Wash.) went 3-for-3, drove in two runs and scored twice, Ashley Garcia (Sr., Beaveton, Ore.) pounded two doubles, and the Wildcats rolled up 11 hits on L&C pitchers Hallie Knife and Jill Pinder.
Southpaw starter Montana McNealy (Jr., Aloha, Ore.) pitched a two-hitter with a couple of strikeouts in her first appearance of the season for the Wildcats.
Grace Middlestadt broke the ice in the bottom of the first inning, drawing a leadoff walk, moving to third base on a double from Garcia, then scoring on a passed ball.
The ‘Cats racked four runs in the second inning. Carson doubled, then was squeezed home on a bunt by Kenzie Schmoll (Fr., Grants Pass, Ore.). Middlestadt added another run on a RBI single from Katy Brosig (Sr., Forest Grove, Ore.) before Garcia delivered a two-run double to make the score 5-0.
McKenna Spieth (Jr., Vancouver, Wash.) doubled in the third inning to score Schmoll. Linfield slammed the door with another four-run burst in the fourth as Lisa Yamamoto (Jr., Carson City, Nev.), Carson and Schmoll took turns driving in runs.
Knife (0-1) and Pinder combined for five strikeouts.
GAME 2: Linfield 8, Lewis & Clark 0, 5 innings
Danielle Duman (Fr., Eugene, Ore.) singled a 2-2 pitch off Kalin Rooney with the bases loaded in the fifth, salting away the Wildcats' fourth five-inning shutout victory of the series.
Garcia homered in her first at bat, the first of the senior's two hits in the game. Schmoll also logged two hits and drove in three runs for the ‘Cats.
Sophomore Maddy Dunn (Soph., Lake Oswego, Ore.) threw a one-hit shutout, striking out two Pioneers without conceding a walk.
Haley Robinson provided L&C's lone hit in the very first at-bat of the game.
‘CAT SCRATCH: Garcia hit .778 for the series (7-for-9) with three doubles, a home run, and seven RBI. . . Brosig hit .625 and scored seven times. . . Linfield's four pitchers combined to hold Lewis & Clark to four hits in 20 innings and a 0.62 batting average. . . Linfield successfully stole 10 bases in 11 tries, three by Middelstadt. . . Linfield's last series whitewash of a conference opponent came in 2011 when the Wildcats held George Fox scoreless in four truncated games, outscoring the Bruins 43-0.
