FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Powered by the 28-point, 11-rebound performance by senior Daniel Zitani, the Pacific Boxers rode past the Linfield Wildcats 81-55 in a Northwest Conference matchup Friday night inside Stoller Center.
The Boxers (15-9, 8-7 NWC) remained in a standoff with George Fox for fifth place in the conference race, which concludes Saturday night. Linfield (4-20, 2-13) dropped its fourth contest in five outings.
Zitani, the NWC's leading scorer, sank 10-of-16 shots from the field, was 7-for-8 at the free throw line, and recorded three steals in a brilliant all-around individual performance.
Chris Dirks (Jr., Hood River, Ore.) and Tanner Brill (Fr., Longview, Wash.) each scored 10 points for Linfield. Dirks sank 4-of-7 from close range. Brill knocked in a couple of 3-pointers while nabbing three rebounds and two assists.
The Boxers scored the game's first basket, a layup by Cameron Hayes, and eventually opened up the lead to double digits, 15-5, on a 3-pointer from Mitch Wettig at the 13:41 mark.
At halftime, the Boxers led 42-29. The lead eventually stretched to 32 points, 80-48, with just over three minutes left.
The Wildcats made just five 3-pointers in 19 tries, compared with the Boxers' 12-for-28 outing. Pacific also controlled the backboards, outrebounding the visitors 33-23.
NEXT: Linfield wraps up the season Saturday night at home. The Wildcats host Pacific Lutheran for Senior Night with the tipoff coming at 8 p.m.
