DURHAM, N.C. – Linfield ace Chris Haddeland (Jr., McMinnville, Ore.) has been selected to USA Baseball's 60-man preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list, released Friday as the first step in a season-long journey to naming the nation's top amateur baseball player July 17.
Haddeland, the reigning national pitcher of the year, was the only NCAA Division III student-athlete to appear on the list, and one of just seven non-Division I baseball standouts.
As a sophomore in 2013, the right-hander won a single-season program record 15 games en route to garnering Northwest Conference, All-West Region and ABCA/d3baseball.com National Pitcher of the Year awards while guiding the Wildcats to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship. He was also named as a finalist for the Oregon Sports Awards' Ad Rutschman Small College Male Athlete of the Year, to be awarded March 9.
So far in 2014, Haddeland has posted 1-0 record, registering the win over NCAA Division II program Western Oregon, with a 0.69 ERA in two appearances.
Recent winners of the Golden Spikes Award, sponsored by Major League Baseball, include Mike Zunino (2012), Trevor Bauer (2011), Bryce Harper (2010), Stephen Strasburg (2009) and Buster Posey (2008). The next step in naming the 2014 honoree is the release of the 50-man midseason watch list April 10. Fans can participate in the voting process beginning May 27.
