TACOMA, Wash. – Enjoying winning performances from Lee Rivers (Sr., Renton, Wash.), Christopher Hu (Fr., Hilo, Hawaii), Elizabeth Fry (Soph., Bellevue, Idaho) and Nikki Overton (Soph., Gresham, Ore.), the Linfield Wildcats competed well against their deeper Northwest Conference counterparts, the Puget Sound Loggers, Saturday afternoon at Wallace Pool.
The UPS men won the NWC dual meet 149-53 while the women topped the Wildcats 137-68.
For the men, Rivers finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a final time of 1:11.95. Teammate Chris Purdy claimed third in the same race, clocking 1:12.57. UPS's Jarik Bainco was second in 1:12.36.
Rivers also earned second place in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.54. The Loggers' Derek Frenzel, who raced to a 2:00.51 finish, edged Rivers for top honors. Rivers was also runner-up to Puget Sound's Keven Henley in the 100 freestyle. Henley touched the wall nearly a full second ahead Rivers.
Hu, a freshman, won the 400 individual medley with a final time of 5:16.51. Hu edged out Bainco by a nose. He finished the race in 5:16.90.
Alec Greenway placed third in the 100 backstroke (1:12.87). Second place went to David Olson (1:07.69). UPS's Teale Kitson was first, covering the two-lap swim in 1:02.75.
On the women's side, Elizabeth Fry (Soph., Bellevue, Idaho) prevailed in the 1,500 freestyle in 18:59.89. Her closest competitor was Caitlin Fuller of UPS, who finished in 19:17.81.
Nikki Overton (Soph., Gresham, Ore.) captured first place in the 100 freestyle (1:02.81), followed by Fuller, who finished in 1:03.45. Overton swam to a second-place showing in the 200 freestyle (2:15.87), trailing only Melissa Norrish, who finished in 2:13.93.
UPS's Claire Diener, Tess Krimmer, and Lauren Kochanowski claimed the top three spots in the 50 freestyle with respective times of 28.84, 29.30 and 29.86.
UP NEXT: After an extended winter break, the Wildcats return to action Jan. 17 to take on Lewis & Clark at 6 p.m. inside the Linfield Aquatics Center. The following day, Linfield takes on Pacific in Forest Grove at 11 a.m.
