SPOKANE, Wash. – In a grueling four-set match, Whitworth defeated Linfield three sets to one Friday night inside the Whitworth Fieldhouse, winning by of 23-25, 25-17, 28-26 and 25-20.
Kailana Ritte-Camara (Jr., Molokai, Hawaii) had four kills of her match-high 13 kills in the opening set, Victoria Thompson (Jr., Newberg, Ore.) added three, and Shayli Coppock (Sr., Temecula, Calif) had two as the Wildcats seized the early momentum, winning by 25-23.
In the second set, Whitworth grabbed the early lead and just kept going. Jalana White and Kristine Kardell both had four kills in the stanza and Nicole Leonard contributed two.
In the third set, the Wildcats fell behind early, but rallied to knot things up. Neither Linfield nor Whitworth was able to score the set point in the closing stages, but the Pirates eventually emerged with the two-point win.
In the clinching set, the lead volleyball back and forth until Whitworth finally took command following a ball-handling error and the Wildcats were unable to recover. Whitworth clinched the match with a 25-20 win.
In total, Ritte-Camara and Thompson each dropped down 13 kills. Coppock delivered eight kills. Courtney Wanamaker (Jr., West Linn, Ore.) contributed 22 digs, Audrey Frazier (Jr., Albany, Ore.) had 15 and Quinn Takashima (Soph., Honolulu, Hawaii) and Casie Gaza (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) both provided 12 digs.
White led the Pirates with 22 kills, followed by Kirstine Kardell with 14. Whitney Santos was stellar in the back row with 29 digs against the Wildcats while Nicole Leonard had 23.
Linfield saw its record fall to 7-15 and 3-12 in the Northwest Conference. Whitworth upped its mark to 15-13, 9-7 in conference action.
