McMINNVILLE, Ore. – In the opening dual meet of the season, Whitman's men's squad defeated Linfield by a score of 157-40 while the Wildcat women's squad fell short of a team victory, 139-65, Friday night at the Linfield Aquatic Center.
Wildcats sophomore Nikki Overton (Soph., Gresham, Ore.) snagged first place in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events with times of 2:01.44 and 5:28.81, respectively. Missionaries swimmer Zoey Watts took second in the 200 freestyle in 2:04.86 and pulled in another second in the 500 freestyle in 5:41.84.
Linfield's Elizabeth Fry (Soph., Bellevue, Idaho) was a runaway winner in the women's 1,000 freestyle in 11:13.34, bettering Watts' time of 11:43.47.
Whitman's Tai Hallstein won the women's 50 freestyle in 25.32 while teammate Ellen Banks followed in 26.26. Hallstein also won the 100 freestyle in 55.21.
Shanley Miller of the Whitman squad took the 200 individual medley in 2:18.62, followed by Wildcat Maggie May (Sr., Aberdeen, Wash.), who tapped the wall in 2:19.30. May also earned second place in the 200 backstroke (2:18.87), finishing as runner up to the Missionaries' Cameo Hlebasko in 2:11.53.
Wildcats sophomore Ian White (Soph., Kailua, Hawaii) came closest to a first-place finish for the Linfield men, snatching second place in the 100 freestyle (49.12). Whitman's Sam Starr won the event in 48.48.
Whitman swimmers Sean Terada and Dalton Cooper went 1-2 in the 100 freestyle with respective times of 10:37.04 and 10:55.47.
Missionaries swimmer Nick Wechter took the 200-yard IM, with a time of 2:01.80, quickly followed by teammate Nic Win (2:02.76). Wechter also won the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.41), second place went to Missionaries Dalton Cooper, and third place went to Wildcat Ian Coker (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) (5:17.81).
NEXT: The ‘Cats take on Whitworth Saturday at 1 p.m. in McMinnville before heading to Pacific Lutheran the following Friday for a 6 p.m. meet.
