McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The 1-2 punch of George Fox outside hitters Erin Campbell and Karlee Jo Sampson was too much for Linfield to handle as the visiting Bruins rendered a three-set Northwest Conference decision over the Wildcats Friday night inside Ted Wilson Gymnasium.
With the 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 victory, the Bruins completed a season sweep of their Yamhill County rivals while pushing their season record past .500 mark at 11-10, 6-7 in the NWC. Linfield dipped to 6-14 overall and 2-11 in conference action.
The Linfield loss spoiled the final home match of graduating seniors Kelsey Ludin (Sr., Bozeman, Mont.) and Shalyi Coppock. With three matches remain, all on the road, the Linfield duo are wrapping up four-year careers.
Campbell hit a crisp .381 at the net, pounding 13 kills, while Sampson added a dozen more while firing at a .267 clip. Bruins setter Chelsea Wilson had 28 digs.
The two teams battled tooth and nail from the outset, facing six ties though the first 17 minutes of action. Aided by three kills from Sampson, the Bruins then reeled off seven straight points to take a 17-10 advantage before the Wildcats closed to within four, 23-19. Back-to-back kills by Kylee Adderson sealed the set in George Fox's favor. Campbell delivered six kills and Adderson had five to pace the Bruins attack. Kailana Ritte-Camara (Jr., Molokai, Hawaii) had four kills and Coppock totaled three of her eight total kills in the opening frame.
Sampson caught fire in the second set, scorching the Wildcats for nine kills on 10 swings, enabling the Bruins climbed out of an early four-point hole. A kill by Sampson broke a 9-all tie, sparking a mini 3-0 run that put the Bruins in front for good. Wilson's eight digs in the set also made a big difference. Ritte-Camara, who totaled a team-best 10 kills, added four more kills for the ‘Cats.
With the third set shaping up to be another tight battle, Campbell came through with three kills, part of a 6-1 run that helped George Fox pull away from a 12-all tie on its way to sealing the match.
GFU hit .226 at the net to Linfield's .133. Wildcat setter Casie Gaza (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii) totaled 14 assists while Audrey Frazier (Jr., Albany, Ore.) had 12 assists and six digs. Quinn Takashima (Soph., Honolulu, Hawaii) racked up 11 digs and Courtney Wanamaker (Jr., West Linn, Ore.) had eight.
‘CAT SCRATCH: Ludin appeared in her 82nd career match while Coppock was making her 78th career appearance. . . the two longtime coaches – Linfield's Shane Kimura and George Fox's Steve Grant – have combined for 1,217 career victories. . . the Wildcats prevailed in just one of eight matches on their own hardwood, sweeping Whitman 3-0 on Oct. 12.
