ALOHA, Ore. – A 21-stroke improvement from the first day to the second was still enough for the Linfield Wildcats to catch the Willamette Bearcats at the Culturame Men's Classic, which concluded Monday at The Reserve Vineyard and Golf Club.
Linfield's final scores read 320-299-619, 31 strokes behind Willamette, which scored evenly both days to finish at 295-293-588. Pacific was third at 333-314-647. Willamette's B squad was fourth, 340-320-660, followed by host George Fox at 344-346-690.
Linfield's Kevin Kawasaki (Jr., West Linn, Ore.) equaled medalist Ryan Kukula's tournament-best, second-round score of 71, moving into seventh place on the final leaderboard. Taylor Klopp (Jr., Eugene, Ore.)'s even rounds of 76-74-150 earned the Wildcats sophomore fifth place, six strokes back of Kukula's 72-71-143.
Kawasaki shot four strokes below par across the final four holes, including an eagle on the 17th hole.
“I was able to sink some putts,” said Kawasaki. “I played more conservatively today.”
Klopp said he “felt more in control. Overall, I had better course management. I came out with a better mindset and executed better.”
Logan Munson (Jr., Wilsonville, Ore.) claimed ninth place, trimming nine strokes from his first day score to score 84-75-159. Kyle Hargrave (Jr., Clackamas, Ore.) shot 81-79-160, equaling the 10th-place finish of teammate Nathan Pellatz, who shot 81-79-160. Pellatz competed as an individual. Taylor Pirnke (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) rounded out the Linfield scoring, shooting 82-80-162 to tie for 12th place.
‘CAT SCRATCH: As a top-six finisher, Klopp was named to the all-tournament team and presented a medal. . . Evan Kasberg (Fr., Kamuela, Hawaii) was forced to withdraw from the tournament on Monday after being hit by a golf ball that sailed over from another fairway on a line drive. The freshman was reported to be bruised but OK after seeking medical treatment.
NEXT: Linfield preps for the final match of the fall season, the Northwest Conference Fall Classic, which runs Oct. 26-27 at Stone Creek in Oregon City. The tournament, featuring all nine NWC teams, counts one-quarter toward deciding the 2013-14 team champion.
