ALOHA, Ore. – Willamette University's 295 on the The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club's North Course set the pace on the first day of action Sunday at the Culturame Invitational, hosted by George Fox University. The Bearcats enjoyed the day's three lowest scorers, including Ryan Kukula's even-par 72 and matching 73s from Chase Lamothe and Clark Wilson.
Linfield shot a combined total of 320 to sit in second place heading to Monday's second round. Pacific is 13 strokes back of the Wildcats at 333, followed by the Willamette's B squad at 340 and George Fox at 344.
Taylor Klopp (Jr., Eugene, Ore.) led Linfield scoring with a 4-over-par 76, good for fifth place. Taylor Pirnke (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) shot 80 to sit in eighth place, Kyle Hargrave (Jr., Clackamas, Ore.) carded an 81 for ninth, and Kevin Kawasaki (Jr., West Linn, Ore.) shares 13th place at 83. Logan Munson (Jr., Wilsonville, Ore.) shot an 84. Competing as individuals were Nathan Pellatz, who turned in an 81, and Evan Kasberg (Fr., Kamuela, Hawaii) at 83.
“It really wasn't that hard out there, but we should have played better,” said Munson. “For me specifically, I need putts that I hit good to actually go in the hole. I have to stay more focused throughout the entire round and not lose my cool.”
Sunday's opening round began shrouded in fog but ended under bright, sunny skies.
“It turned out to be glorious day out there,” said Wildcats coach Greg Copeland. “We struggled with the putter a little bit. Everyone was reading just a little bit to much break on the ball and a couple of wayward swings cost us some strokes.
Copeland and the Wildcats will try to smooth out the rough spots when play resumes Monday morning.
“We just have to be more consistent,” said Copeland. “(Sunday) we were between 76 and 83, bit we just need to to consistently lower our scores and get everyone scoring under 75. We have the ability to do that, but we just have to get more consistent.”
