Interview with Kyle Hargrave
McMINNVILLE, Ore. – A tournament-low 72 from Linfield junior Kyle Hargrave (Jr., Clackamas, Ore.) carried the Linfield Wildcats to a three-stroke victory at the six-team Linfield Invitational contested Tuesday at sunny Michelbook Country Club.
Hargrave won his first collegiate tournament, edging Willamette all-star Ryan Kukula by two strokes. Linfield's Taylor Klopp (Jr., Eugene, Ore.) was third with a 75.
Afterward, Hargrave credited his short game as the key to shooting his best-ever round.
“I wasn't hitting my irons very well so there were a lot of holes where I had to get up and down just to make par,” he said. “My short game was really good today and I kept everything in play.”
It didn't hurt his chances, either, that he was competing on the Wildcats' home course.
“On every hole, I hit what I wanted to do. There were no surprises. It was a pretty consistent round today,” said Hargrave. “Whenever I would have a hiccup, I was able to come back with some birdies and keep my momentum going.”
The Wildcats' A squad shot a collective round of 309, bettering Willamette's 312. Warner Pacific scored 317 to earn third place followed by Lewis & Clark and Linfield's B squad, each at 339. Willamette's second unit was sixth at 340.
In addition to Hargrave and Klopp, the Linfield A group benefited from a 78 by Logan Munson (Jr., Wilsonville, Ore.), who tied for fifth place. Kevin Kawasaki (Jr., West Linn, Ore.) shared 16th place at 84, and Taylor Pirnke (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) scored 85 to tie for 18th place.
For Linfield's B squad, Sam McClain (Fr., Tacoma, Wash.) shot an 81 to tie for 12th, Bryce Anderson (Fr., Miles City, Mont.) carded an 84, good for 25th place, and Evan Kasberg (Fr., Kamuela, Hawaii) was a 86. Justin Huckins (Sr., Bend, Ore.) shot 88 while Thomas Arand (Jr., McMinnville, Ore.) registered a 93.
COMING UP: Linfield heads to The Reserve Vineyard and Golf Club for the Culturame Classic, hosted Sunday and Monday by George Fox University. Serving as the final tuneup prior to the Northwest Conference Fall Classic, the two-day tournament counts 25 percent toward determining the 2013-14 conference champion.
