SPOKANE, Wash. – With all but one player trimming strokes from his first-day score, the Linfield Wildcats moved up one notch to claim fifth place at the 11-team Whitworth Men's Invitational, which concluded Monday afternoon at Manito Country Coub.
Linfield shot 311 on Monday an, nine strokes better than their combined total of 320 from Sunday. The Wildcats' two-day score of 631 moved them ahead of Whitworth's B squad for fifth place. North Idaho College was the team champion with a two-round total of 285-302-587, easily outdistancing runner-up Pacific Lutheran 287-312-599.
Wildcats junior Logan Munson (Jr., Wilsonville, Ore.) enjoyed the best round by a Linfield player Monday, carding a 74 and finishing at 155 overall, good for a share of 19th place.
“We were more used to the greens today and overall played better,” said Munson. “The greens were definitely quicker than what we are used to at Michelbook Country Club. Everyone chipped and putted a little bit better,” said Munson.”
Kevin Kawasaki (Jr., West Linn, Ore.) led the Wildcats at the tournament, shooting 74-76-150 to share eighth place. Taylor Pirnke (Jr., Mill Creek, Wash.) scored consistent rounds of 78-78 for a 156 total, placing 21st among 59 competitors. Sam McClain (Fr., Tacoma, Wash.), who shot 87-85-172, began with two birdies and finished with five birdies on the day, earning 47th place.
Rounding out the Linfield scoring was Evan Kasberg (Fr., Kamuela, Hawaii), who improved from 93 on the first day to 83 on Monday for a 176 total and 51st place. Competing as an individual, Justin Huckins (Sr., Bend, Ore.) scored 88-87-175.
Though flat and relatively short, the course had its share of challenges.
“There were a lot of trees and they were definitely not forgiving,” said Munson. “If your ball went into the trees, we had to just make the safe play and punch it out onto the fairway to try and save a bogey.
COMING UP: Linfield heads to the rescheduled Culturame Classic, Sunday and Monday at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha. The event, hosted by George Fox, is the final competition prior to the NWC Fall Classic.
