ALOHA, Ore. – Competing for the first time in two weeks after a nasty rainstorm canceled the previous weekend’s tournament, Linfield shot its way to fifth place on Day 1 of the Culturame Classic, hosted by George Fox Saturday afternoon at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club.
Abigail Heringer (Fr., Salem, Ore.) led the Wildcat contingent with a five-over-par 78, good for a two-way tie for fifth place. Maggie Harlow (Soph., Hillsboro, Ore.) shared 10th place with two other golfers after all three carded an 81 for the first 18 holes.
Collectively, Linfield totaled 369 strokes for the opening round, 37 strokes behind host George Fox. The Bruins led all teams on Day 1 with a collective score of 318, just ahead of Whitman (320). Oregon’s Cali Hipp, George Fox’s Sydney Maluenda and Whitman’s Kelly Sweeney tied for the first-round lead with a three-over-par 76.
Alexandria Smith (Sr., Bellingham, Wash.) and Laura Waller (Fr., Hood River, Ore.) rounded out the scoring four for Linfield. Smith was 29th with an 18-over-par 91, while Waller shot 119 to finish in 41st place.
Action resumes Sunday at The Reserve.
