McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Una Areta and Hannah Herbert combined for 23 kills and the Pacific Boxers hit a crisp .310 at the net on the way to a three-set road sweep of the Linfield Wildcats Saturday night inside Ted Wilson Gymnasium. The scores were 25-20, 25-21, 25-15.
The Boxers evened their Northwest Conference record at 3-3 (4-9 overall) while keeping the Wildcats (0-6 NWC, 4-9 overall) still continuing to search of their first league win.
Kailana Ritte-Camara (Jr., Molokai, Hawaii) totaled nine kills and 10 digs, Victoria Thompson (Jr., Newberg, Ore.) added six kills, and Shayli Coppock (Sr., Temecula, Calif) and Molly McTaggart (Fr., Burlington, Wash.) each contributed five kills for the home-standing ‘Cats.
The Boxers put the Wildcats on their heels from the start and never relented.
Pacific reeled off the match's first five points to grab the momentum from the get-go. Linfield closed to within two, 10-8, before the Boxers recoiled on the way to a 26-19 win. Linfield trailed by as many as nine points in the opening stanza as Una Areta paved the way with four kills and Mariah McHolland and Hannah Herbert both added three. Molly McTaggart (Fr., Burlington, Wash.) and Shayli Coppock (Sr., Temecula, Calif) accounted for three kills on the Wildcats' side of the ledger. Pacific hit .303 to Linfield's .122.
The second set was closer but the outcome still tilted in the Boxers' favor. Three kills by Sam Hammons (Fr., Estacada, Ore.) and Victoria Thompson (Jr., Newberg, Ore.) kept Linfield close throughout.
The third set saw the Wildcats try to overcome deficits of 16-8 and 21-11. But four kills by Areta stopped the Wildcats in their tracks and ensured the Boxers left with a sweep.
Thirty-one kills by Pacific setter Emily Farnham fueled the Boxers' offense. Pacific was charged with just nine errors the entire match, less than half of Linfield's total of 20. Becky Sheller had 16 digs from the back row.
COMING UP: Linfield continues its five-match homestand Friday and Saturday nights with NWC tilts scheduled against Whitworth and Whitman. Both matches get underway at 7 p.m.
