WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Scoring one goal in each half, Whitman senior Mackenzie Hughes spearheaded an upset of 20th-ranked Linfield Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Hughes put the Missionaries ahead 1-0 in the 10th minute, playing a through ball from Taylor Thomas and getting past Wildcat keeper Kallina Haase (Soph., Portland, Ore.) for her team-leading sixth goal of the year. Hughes scored again midway through the second period by way of a successful penalty kick conversion after Haase was sent off with a red card.
Linfield pressured early, earning a corner kick just 27 seconds into the match, but a header shot from Emily Fellows (Jr., Portland, Ore.) went wide. The Wildcats had just four additional scoring opportunities in the first half, one of their lowest offensive showings of the season.
The Whitman defense was stifling in the second half, surrendering just three shot attempts and one corner kick over the final 45 minutes. For the match, the Missionaries outshot the visitors 13-8. Fellows paced Linfield with three shots, including one on target.
Defensively, Whitman keeper Emily Davis made three saves to earn the victory.
The Missionaries improve to 7-3 overall, including 3-3 against Northwest Conference opponents. The Wildcats, meanwhile, ran their record to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the league.
