BANKS, Ore. – Freshman Abigail Heringer (Fr., Salem, Ore.) made a splash in her first collegiate tournament, shooting a two-over-par 74 for the first round to lead Linfield on the first day of the Pacific Invitational, held Saturday at the Quail Valley Golf Club.
As a team, the Wildcats shot 359, 71 strokes over par, and sat in eighth place after eighteen holes. Led by Sydney Maluenda’s 73, George Fox edged Whitman by one stroke on Day 1, totaling a cumulative score of 309 to the Missionaries’ 310. Whitman’s Catelyn Webber shared the first-round lead with Maluenda, with Linfield’s Heringer one stroke back.
Heringer chipped in twice, once for par and once for birdie, and shot a one-under on the back nine to pace the Linfield contingent. She finished with three birdies as the only Wildcat to score in the 70s, and sat in third place after 18 holes.
Alexandria Smith (Sr., Bellingham, Wash.) shot an 11-over-par 83 for the first round, good for a share of 24th place. Maggie Harlow (Soph., Hillsboro, Ore.) tied for 38th with a 91, while Malika Reynolds (Soph., Hood River, Ore.) rounded out the scoring quartet with a career-low 111 for a two-way share of 62nd place. Reynolds twice hit for par, the first of her career, and nearly achieved a chip-in for her best career round.
While not included in the team scoring, Erin Crofcheck (Soph., Prineville, Ore.) hit for par on the par-four first hole and finished with a 113 in her first collegiate tournament.
Overall, Linfield’s golfers swung the club well, but struggled with their respective short games.
“The greens were really tricky,” Smith said. “They were a lot faster than we expected.”
With the first day of tournament play under their belts, and a better understanding of the terrain, the Wildcats hope that better putting yields lower scores when action resumes Sunday at Quail Valley.
"Now people have an idea about what to expect," Smith said. "We're hoping to get the greens down and make a lot more putts to lower all our scores. We all can drop a few strokes."
