A dominating pitching performance at the Austin Regional no doubt sealed the deal for Linfield ace Chris Haddeland (Soph., McMinnville, Ore.) to be named the D3baseball.com All-West Region Pitcher of the Year, an honor announced Monday following the conclusion of regional tournament action over the weekend. The organization also recognized Scott Brosius as the All-West Region Coach of the Year after the Wildcats captured their third regional crown in seven years to advance to this week’s NCAA Division III Baseball Finals.
Haddeland added to his Division III-leading victories total during the regional tournament, pitching a complete-game shutout, the final four outs of Linfield’s first matchup against Trinity and 5 2/3 scoreless innings in the championship game to earn his 12th and 13th wins of the year plus a save. He was chosen as the Austin Regional Most Outstanding Player after throwing 16 scoreless innings, piling up 12 strikeouts against zero walks.
The Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Year boasts a 0.99 ERA with a team-high 85 strikeouts, seven complete games and two shutouts as part of 109 innings pitched.
Including Haddeland, total of five Wildcat players – three on first team and two on the second – made an appearance on the All-West Region squad.
Tim Wilson (Jr., Redmond, Wash.) became a repeat first team honoree as Linfield’s leader in batting average (.420), hits (81), on-base percentage (.479) and stolen bases (31). He was also a first team all-Northwest Conference pick and was named to the Austin Regional All-Tournament Team. The second baseman – and occasional left fielder – is the Wildcats’ all-time career stolen bases leader (70) and ranks in the top 10 nationally for hits this season.
Outfielder Jake Wylie (Jr., Eagle, Idaho) was Linfield’s top slugger this year, supplying a team-high 18 doubles and seven home runs to go along with an RBI total (60) that rates among the highest in Division III in 2013. The Northwest Conference first team all-star has started 32 games in the outfield, seven behind the plate and four as the club’s designated hitter. He shares the team lead with 13 multiple-RBI games, including three contests in which he drove in five or more runs.
Teammates Nick Fisher (Jr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Aaron Thomassen (Soph., Seattle, Wash.) were designated as as second team All-West Region honorees. Both were selected to the all-tournament squad and the all-NWC first team.
Fisher posted a career-high .390 average and .622 slugging percentage and has smacked 24 extra-base hits (14 doubles, four triples, six home runs) for 45 RBI so far this year. Linfield’s right fielder has stolen 24 bases – second most on the team – and has perfectly fielded 76 defensive opportunities against just one error.
Thomassen owns an 11-1 record in 13 appearances this season, along with a 2.66 ERA. He ranks second among Linfield pitchers in total strikeouts (69) and holds opposing batters to a .236 average. He has surrendered just 14 extra-base hits while coaxing 72 groundouts.
Brosius has guided the Wildcats to a 38-7 record this season, his sixth as head coach, and leads Linfield into its third NCAA Division III Baseball Finals in school history. Already in 2013, the ‘Cats have set the program record for single-season victories, achieved their 22nd consecutive 20-win season and claimed their first No. 1 ranking of the Division III era.
More than 700 players were nominated for the all-region teams in their second year sponsored by D3baseball.com. Ballots were made available to sports information directors across Division III institutions and conferences, as well as D3baseball.com staff and contributors.
