NEWBERG, Ore. – With one last opportunity to qualify for the national championship meet, a small Linfield contingent took to Colcord Field for the GFU Final Qualifier Thursday evening.
The Wildcats won all three contested throwing events, getting a different victor in each one. Anna LaBeaume (Jr., Sequim, Wash.) took the hammer with a heave of 154 feet, 6 inches (47.10 meters) to win the event by nearly 30 feet. Courtney Alley (Jr., Eagle, Idaho) won the discus uncontested (112-09/34.38m) and was runner-up in the hammer (127-00/38.70m).
Kate Shear (Jr., Knappa, Ore.) threw a season-best 132 feet, 3 inches (40.30 meters) to win the javelin. The toss moved her up to 29th on the NCAA Division III performance list, but the junior, who missed most the year recovering from off-season surgery, is unlikely to receive an invitation to the national meet as only the top 22 competitors make the cut.
In other field event action, Joy Harpham (Fr., Ashland, Ore.) won the uncontested high jump, clearing the bar at 4 feet, 11 inches (1.50 meters). Amy Bumatai (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) and Amanda Gibbon (Soph., Kirkland, Wash.) tied for second in the pole vault (9-02.25/2.80m). Gibbon’s clearance was a career best by more than half a foot.
Siena Noe (Soph., Yakima, Wash.) placed second in the 1,500 meters (5:14.16) and Madison Trowbridge (Soph., Portland, Ore.) was third in the 5,000 (21:25.55) to pace Linfield in the running events.
Only three Wildcats competed on the men’s side, but all placed in the top three of their respective events.
Morgunn Ewing (Soph., Bothell, Wash.) led the way with a winning effort in the javelin (171-10/52.38m).
Teammates Nick Fairhart (Soph., Morton, Wash.) and Kyle Pfeifer (Sr., Eagle, Idaho) finished 2-3 in the hammer throw. Fairhart tossed the ball and chain 148 feet, 3 inches (45.20m) while Pfeifer put up a throw of 145 feet, 5 inches (44.34m).
COMING UP: The NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships are scheduled for May 23-25 in La Crosse, Wis. LaBeaume is the only Linfield student-athlete expected to receive an invitation to compete.
