Austin Regional Website
Led by top-ranked Linfield, four Top 25 baseball clubs are part of the six teams selected to compete in the Austin regional to begin the 2013 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship. The complete 56-team field was announced early Monday morning via a press release on the NCAA.com website.
After automatically qualifying for the tournament by clinching their third Northwest Conference title in four seasons with a 34-6 overall record, the Wildcats were awarded the top seed in the region, earning a first-round date with Texas Lutheran out of the American Southwest Conference. The clubs open tournament play Wednesday at noon Central time. All games in the Austin Regional, hosted by Concordia (Texas), will be played at Tornado Field.
Linfield is the top seed in the regional, which features two other top-10 programs out of the West Region: sixth-ranked Trinity and seventh-ranked Cal Lutheran. Pomona Pitzer, 17th-ranked Texas-Tyler and Texas Lutheran round out the six-team tournament.
The Wildcats were one of 38 programs to automatically qualify for the tournament as conference champions; an additional four independent Pool B berths and 14 at-large Pool C invitations were allocated for a total field of 56 teams. Six teams are set to compete at four regional sites, and eight teams will compete at four regional sites. All regionals will use a double-elimination format.
The eight regional champions advance to the Division III finals, contested at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis., May 24-28.
