WHITTIER, Calif. – Whittier attacker Carolyn Mukai found the back of the net seven times and set up two other scores and the home-standing Poets rolled past the Linfield Wildcats 17-4 in a women’s lacrosse match Wednesday night at Memorial Stadium.
Most of the action took place in the Linfield half of the field as the Poets outshot the Wildcats by a wide margin, 48-11. Whittier also dominated the other significant statistical categories, winning 34 ground balls to Linfield’s 15, and holding a 19-4 edge in draw controls.
Brittani Drost (Sr., Forest Grove, Ore.) accounted for two goals, scoring on both of her shot attempts. Halee Helgerson (Soph., Milwaukie, Ore) and Shelby Duarte (Soph., San Ramon, Calif.) also contributed goals for the Wildcats.
Wildcats goalkeeper Erika Phillipo (Fr., Eugene, Ore.) was credited with 18 saves. Rebecca Kropp (Soph., Beaverton, Ore.) picked up four ground balls and Hana Gould (Soph., Portland, Ore.) scooped up three loose balls. Duarte forced three turnovers and led Linfield statistics with five shot attempts.
Linfield fell behind 10-2 by the intermission and never recovered.
NEXT: Linfield returns to the Northwest for its final two matches of the season. The Wildcats head to Tacoma, Wash., on April 7 for a rematch with the Puget Sound Loggers at 1 p.m., then visits Pacific in the season finale April 12 at 6 o’clock.
