McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Three see-saw doubles matches – two that ultimately favored the visiting Puget Sound Loggers – foreshadowed the outcome of a Northwest Conference dual match Friday afternoon at the Linfield Tennis Center. With gutsy performances in the upper flights, Puget Sound prevailed in a battle of winless teams, registering a 6-3 victory over the host Wildcats.
Linfield freshman Tim Hawkins (Fr., Boise, Idaho) won both his singles and doubles matches to highlight a spirited effort by the Wildcats.
The Loggers moved to 1-7 overall and in NWC action, dropping the ‘Cats to 0-8 for the season.
Hawkins teamed with partner Micah Roos (Soph., Port Angeles, Wash.) for a narrow 9-8 (8-6) win over the UPS duo of Daniel Deuel and Jake Peterson in the No. 2 flight. No. 1 doubles was no less tense as the Loggers’ Michael Cutter and Graham Baker outlasted Zachery Lyons (Sr., Vancouver, Wash.) and Lukas Kleinman (Soph., Vancouver, Wash.) 9-7. Abe Noys and John Stevens scored an 8-4 decision at No. 3 doubles in what was the first team point of the match.
The intensity carried over to singles play, where Roos clinched a back-and-forth 5-7, 7-5, 10-2 win over Baker at No. 2 doubles. Cutter rallied from one set down to surprise Lyons, 1-6, 6-43, 6-4 at No. 1. And Noyes withstood a strong opening set by Joel Trousdale (Soph., Hillsboro, Ore.) to beat the Linfield sophomore 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 at No. 4.
Hawkins, who logged his first collegiate singles and doubles victories, recorded a 6-4, 6-4 result over Peterson at No. 5. In other matches, Deuel beat Kleinman 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 and Stevens topped Alex Mangan (Fr., Klamath Falls, Ore.) 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6.
“Tim had a good outing. His positive energy paid off in doubles and he fought hard for every point to win his singles match,” said Wildcats coach Carl Swanson. “Micah teamed up with Tim to win a doubles point for the team and he had a strong finish in singles in the third-set tiebreaker.”
